Yeah, the ones I had previously did not extend out at all just a "screw into the hole". Screwing them in wasn't much less hassle, because your screwdriver has to be at an angle. If someone ever finds a better solution, hoping they post it. I'm good with mine. I don't swap them in and out often.

I have one that I wired up for use with zn-1/zn-2 output to my audio matrix including stereo amp and a/v capture.

They also work well for adapting things like sony zn-* to output in stereo either in a cab or outputting to a home entertainment amp, etc.

Theres other examples of difficulty being lower on Japanese compared to US (and possibly other regions), but not as notable as super x compared to ST as noted above. Alpha 2/Zero 2 is another example.

A logic probe would be quicker than multimeter. Go around and check each pin. If you find one floating then you can check the spreadsheet to see if it should have activity. Sometimes ic's will be acting up and that can be heard via the probe - the signal sounds abnormal, not rhythmic...
