Hey there -

Apologies if this has been answered before... I did a search and couldn't exactly find my answer.

I'm trying to diagnose a KOF98 (PROGSF1+CHA512Y), and I'm trying to determine whether my C-ROMs are okay. I de-soldered all of them, but I don't know how to fully check them against a MAME set, since they're 64mbit (8MB). I tried verifying them as 27C322s (with my TOP3000), but that is a 32mbit (4MB) type, so I'm guessing that I'm only checking the low 4MB by doing that? (They all came up verified though.)

I get that I can't burn a 64mbit EPROM (because they don't exist?) but is there any way to even read the MASK ROMs so that I can see if they're good? (I have a TOP3000, TLL866ii+ and GQ4x4 as options).

Thanks!

Most likely it has a bad Altera CPLD. Your best bet is moving all ROMs from the SF1 board to a BK1 one replacing P1 with a 27C160 containing the decrypted ROM.

Thanks for the reply, @alexcom !

I had heard that the encrypted P1s on the SF1 boards would fail sometimes. I've already ordered a BK1 board and will try to move the ROMs over and see if that fixes it.

I was worried that it wasn't a code problem, because the game still boots and works up until the character select screen, just with corrupted images:

However, it doesn't proceed into an actual match, so there's probably a code issue anyway. :) We'll see how the transfer to the BK1 board comes out!

Thanks!

Just to close the loop here, @alexcom was right. Transferring the roms to a BK1 board fixed the issue:

Then I had another issue where some of the voice samples were playing back as static. Some continuity checking revealed that one of the address lines of V4 wasn't connected to the bus on this new BK1 board. Running a wire fixed it:

Cart seems to work perfectly now! :)
