What's new
(I'm horrible) havent stopped by here in a while (anxiety issues) - I owe a lot of people a lot of info...Varga reached out to me on twitter, and I'm going to cobble together a how-to for the IO half of this.
Aye! Good to see you again bro! I hope you’re doing ok!

I skipped some posts, possibly going over already covered territory, but yeah, you need to have the ribbon cable connected for controls to work in most games. As for Zoids, it's very possible you need a (specific JVS) IO board for the game to boot.

Put a a electric tape stip in jamma edge to cover 25&26 and the back of it will cover it, i think that is the culprit, those chamma is a killer

The wire is black, it's likely GND, so completely in spec.

Also, this is an accident waiting to happen:

Trim those ends.

Just for everyone's reference- the zoids games will work with pretty much any JVS IO that offers 2 players and digital IO's..
the only thing you lose by not using the official Taito JVS pcb is the serial interface for card readers, and I'm not even 100% certain that can't be achieved with alternate IO boards that do have a serial IO port.
I am NOT certain if you can use the 2x6 JAMMA-quasi-JVS IO however, and from memory, I feel like the game refuses to boot fully without a normal JVS IO board.
That said, the twinstick pinout is pretty wild, and someone over at Taito didn't really give a damn about any sense of normalcy.

At least all VO games use a pretty standard "left stick is P1 lever + B1/B2 and right stick is P2 lever + B1/B2" logic...
Taito did more of a "we have # inputs on this pcb, so lets jsut slam them in one after another, who cares that half the right stick is on P1 buttons, and the rest is all jumbled up over on P2"

it's just a rewiring job though, and rather easy at that.

From research, some 2X6 games allow for the PS2 controller ports to function, and my original plan was to adapt a VO Twinstick via Retropad32.

Yes I'm fully aware it's dangerous, was a quick hack job for testing, that cable is probs gonna be trashed.

Defor and I are chatting about that alternate IO board/power solution.
Same desired end result, just a different way of getting there.

only a very FEW games support the PS2 ports sadly, and zoids definitely isn't one of them...
Basically you're looking at SC2, SC3, Tekken 5, Tekken 5DR, and .. i think there's something else, but it's a pretty bad selection...
tons of games that COULD simply don't, and shoehorning support in is probably not likely to happen as the controller libraries are simply not even called by the game code...

Yeah, this is most of the list I have put together from online resources and my own testing of which games have PlayStation controller support:

Tekken 5/5.1
Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection
Soul Calibur II
Soul Calibur III Arcade Edition
Kinnikuman: Muscle Grand Prix
Kinnikuman: Muscle Grand Prix 2
Bloody Roar 3

I haven't tested any of the Gundam games to check if any of them have controller support though. I need to re-check one 246 fighter (prideGP) as I think it did have controller support, I just forgot to document it. But as you can see, it’s mostly the fighters that have controller support.

nope- the gundam games definitely don't do it either. that's actually where i started down this deep dark hole of system 2x6- trying to get gundam vs series up and running at home...
Pride actually does sound right as having it...

This is the good shit I've been after all this time, people who know EXACTLY what they're talking about.
Of course my luck (as with most of my oddball projects), Zoids is one of the wacky ones, no controller support and JVS required.

TBH, it's more an oddball thing to find a game that DOES support the ps2 ports...
Somewhat like Naomi games that support the Maple bus for DC controllers.
The only games that I'm aware even advertised the feature were Tekken 5 and 5DR as they have a custom harness to add back the controller ports to a 256.

remember, even though the 2x6 has a lot of PS2 dna in it, in the end it's an arcade board with intent to be used in arcades and never exist in a home setting...
My bet is that for most games that do still have the feature, it's simply there because the developers never removed the code that called the controller library, as it would have been easier to test with controller than via JVS
