Try first do piggybacking with known good chips to see if something changes on the screen.

Check the two palette RAMs near the edge connector (they are Sony CXK5814 so high failure rate devices).

Yes, this was my assumption since Demon's World do use the 'GXC-04' MCU.

The GXC-04 is a TMS320C010 DSP co-processor in disguise with internal MASK ROM, it's used as protection. Anyway, I just checked, Zero Wing PCB does not carry the 'GXC-04', maybe your are confusing it with the 'FDA' chip.Please, check better your board.

If the RAMs are reported bad although you replaced them it means that they cannot be reached/adressed by the device that wants to read/write them.Schematics of this PCB are not available but you can easily figure out which device the RAMs are connected to.If the RAMs are the WORK ones they are...

Judging from its position the electrolytic capacitor @C4 is most likely for filtering the +12V line.The board can run without it but sound amplifier may oscillate and break.
