What's new

Aero City - flooded, forgotten, found.

Alright, finally some progress today after coming home to some long awaited items. The new castors and leg levellers arrived from DeJapan. Both bought from Rakuten. A big thanks to @erzane for guiding me in the right direction and knowing the part numbers for these items. These are identical to the originals.

The decals also arrived. It was mid afternoon when I started this so it was a quick job. I put on the repro two player decal. This one has the chrome underneath and I think white ink on top - then the blue so the blue colour is right. The powder coat was so thick I had to run the Dremel around the holes to allow the buttons to fit

The Alberto panel is top quality and looks premium but I wanted an overlay more like the 2P design with the Sega ®️ logo on top and the grey button backdrop. That meant covering the original style. Here’s what I went with.

The original Alberto finish.

Here are the headphone and volume knob decals printed on chrome.

There is an issue however. The side decals and alternative front decals (that I’m not using) aren’t colour matched like I was told they were. Something’s been missed here I’m sure.

I might end up using the side decals I got from Arcadeartrepro that are a brighter blue - even though Mikonos went to a lot of trouble to make his ones. I’ll do some comparisons tomorrow.

I’m pretty happy with these colours but will tweak them more if necessary tomorrow when I get the decal applied to the control panel surround. The colours aren’t popping that well in these pics but IRL they look great. I doubt I nailed the joystick orientation but will work that out when I connect them. All new joysticks and buttons here. I put a metal pivot in the 1P stick. The buttons are Sanwa’s, joysticks are LS-32s, one lever has a Seimitsu Keikou Nobi bullet top and the others are Seimitsu Keikou ball tops. All from @xb74 at CQB arcade

legit this is the best resto I've ever seen for an Aero, Well done! an amazing journey and it looks beautiful! thanks for taking us on the ride too
Yeah, I gotta agree, this restore is bonkers. Being in the same country as @Ziggy Cheetos Dust - I wonder if he'd be kind enough to take all my cabs and give them the same treatment :)

Choice of colours and fitouts on the panels is amazing too.

Thanks guys. Very generous of you to say that.

Here are the two sets of decals laid out. I’m glad I sourced two sets now - even thought it was bookoo cash - because the arcadeartrepro side decals matched the Mikonos panel decals better.

The top decal in the second picture was a mission to get made but I wanted the original wrap around finish. I think GateNinety used to have these. The bottom decal from arcadeartrepro I guess could have been wrapped around with lots of trimming and cutting or trimmed on the edges only. But the Mikonos one it is for me on this occasion.

Wow! That is indeed a rare item.

It was really tricky to apply. I used the wet method because it’s safer - and it did save me. Folding the edges over was resulting in lifting on the visible side. I ended up having to unpeel the folds and do it again with my wife’s help. You really need about six hands. I used a hair dryer as well and a card to try and push out the bubbles. I got there in the end. It could have been neater on the underside but it will do. It’s ultimately concealed where it attaches anyway which pushes down any bits that want to unfold. I attached it with new nuts. The little black square under the hole has some corrosion on it so I turned it upside down so the nice side faces up, while putting gloss black vinyl on the rougher side to face down.

I put the castors on. I’m leaving the bottom castors on for now as well. This thing is really heavy and I’ll need four castors on the bottom to move it around. You can only wheel it so close to a wall with the back castors. One day when it’s set up in a more permanent home I’ll put the new leg levellers on.
