Wondering if there's something out there. A lot of times I'm looking for high quality pictures of PCBs but I have to go search google and all I find is crap low quality pics or dead auctions etc. Ideally I would like a searchable database that would show high resolution pictures of front and back of PCBs including originals and bootlegs for identification. Anything like that out there? If not, thinking about making it.

if it were to be done here, picsa would need to be in link form, not posted directly to the forum to spreserve bandwith

That's a cool site, but yeah I would like something where users can easily contribute their own pics as well. I guess I'll think about the site design a bit.

I've used the above suggestions many times... some other ones that haven't been mentioned yet:
a good resource: http://www.wolfgangrobel.de/arcadetalk/pcbgalerie.htm
really crappy pictures but useful if you've already looked everywhere else: http://arcadecollecting.xmission.com/pcbpics/
not a lot of pics but some good ones: http://toaplan.net/pcb_ident.html
PGM Specific Scans: http://www.igspgm.com/pcb/index.htm

not a database but lots of great pics in system11's blog: http://blog.system11.org/

I’ll probably be doing a self hosted wiki style as I have some old PCs I can repurpose as a web server. Looking into the options at the moment.

yeah, I've got hundreds of pictures organized by System that I use for my own reference. usually scoured from google, ebay and yahoo auctions.

Currently I'm evaluating different Wiki software, here are some of the candidates:

Wiki.js - I test drived this for a few days, documentation is spotty and the administrative interface is kinda janky, like you can't even delete an asset folder??? Also customization seems limited
Mediawiki - what wikipedia uses - haven't tested yet
Bookstack- haven't tested yet
Outline - haven't tested yet

Any specific recommendations? The server is an old Intel 9400f w/ a 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM running Ubuntu server.

As someone who has hosted various wikis before: pick the wiki platform that is the most user friendly and/or has the most wide adoption on the internet.

you want something that people aren't frustrated to contribute to, and someone that has good support from the community if you need to extend it's functionality.

My brother had a wiki for a while, but Chinese spammers (as in people who create random unrelated pages with Chinese text) were generating too much work moderating so he stopped. File another under "this is why we can't have nice things". The same reason why I disabled comments on my old blog.

Someone also mentioned pcbdb.net on the shmups forum. I took a look at the raiden fighters 2 page. They do have pics of the PCB but it’s at a measly 600x522 resolution. Further, there are no pics of the PCB inside the cart, which is required to ID original vs bootleg or conversion etc. No pics of the mobo without cart either, or PCB variants like the single board PCB. This is exactly what I’m talking about with regard to my dissatisfaction with existing sites. Thus, I’m still inclined to roll out my own solution.

With regard to spam, yeah the plan is to make contributors whitelist / invite only, and not let just any random person (bot) post edits. Hopefully that would address the spam issue.

I'm up for contributing to a PCB pictures wiki, but I suggest you also have enforced guidelines on photo resolution and quality. If a board has been altered from stock then that should be noted in it's pictures entry as well.
