Attempted scam by Forum member

Some of you guys are out here acting like you've never used PayPal before. I'm just gonna put out there that @tonyt76 has bought several $1000 worth of parts from both myself, and a few close friends. We've had no issues with him in the past. He's been a reliable buyer, paying on time and such. I've also purchased from him and received things in good packed condition.

I read another thread here recently with a seller I have dealt with and the piranhas came out on this thread too. https://www.arcade-projects.com/forums/index.php?threads/possibly-getting-screwed-by-a-member-deal-done-on-fb-though.10397/

Someone said that the onus was on the buyer, and to be honest if you don't like PayPals rules, you as the seller should look for another platform to use. You didn't even let PayPal complete the process they put in place to protect you both before coming on here and letting the piranhas feed once again.

Give each other some hugs and relax! Maybe we should settle this over a game of SFII?

Please don't try and blame anyone else for someone's issue.

I've sold enough through PayPal to be 1099'd by them multiple times, iirc that triggers after around $20k in sales in a year. I think I know how it works.

If I had a buyer do this to me, without contacting me first, I'd black ball them from any future business, and tell anyone who asked me they weren't worth selling to. And I refund when there are problems and take care of all my buyers. But this is a community, it's personal, and it's small. You send a note before you bang the red button in the system.

Walking around telling people thems the breaks, and you're entitled to whatever isn't gonna earn you friends. If you don't like acting like this a community then look for somewhere else to buy from?

And really, people shouldn't be so quick to freak when it comes to handling things you get shipped in. I have Taito stools with bent legs that I imported directly from Taito myself. It happens.

This. It's always better to avoid dealing with paypal disputes whenever possible. It wastes everyone's time.

You know what scammers do? They open paypal claims with no contact to the seller as the deadline to file gets near. They also have a backstory for their limited communication (sick, in the hospital, the usual "car accident", or maybe something like, uh I don't know... a new baby). They also stall communication by "the ball is in your court" techniques similar to how it was put back on rancor to fix the issue.

You know what normal people do who have had previous contact with a buyer to set up a transaction from a niche forum do? They send PMs and make legit, genuine efforts to resolve issues and then, after all channels of negotiation have been exhausted, they use paypal as a last resort.

TBH I don't buy the "reacted harshly" statement either. It would be easier in your blind rage to send an angry PM rather than log into paypal, look up your transaction from *months* ago, and fill out all the necessary forms to file the claim. Sounds more calculated than reactionary to me. My point with all this is that it doesn't look good for you and the onus was on you (not Rancor) to work toward the solution.

Of course, this could all be a big mixup and you're a decent dude/dudette. If that's the case then hopefully this is a learning thread of how to do business in a forum/community setting where we are friends here VS any old random ebay transaction.

Definitely this could have been dealt in a better way. 2 months is a bit too much, but I would have contacted the seller first.

Also I wouldnt have posted here an attempted scam thread unless I try to contact the claimer and I get no answer.

We hope you guys solve this in a friendly way. Maybe you can file a claim and get some money back from the shipping company or it's possible to fix the stools for a few bucks.

In any case, please keep this polite or ....

On a related note I'm buying some of these same Taito stools, do any of you master sellers have tips on how I should tell my guy to pack them so they don't get damaged? When you chose to import @Aurich did you have Taito ship them direct, or did you have a broker handle the import for you? From what I've read here neither TokyoShmups or whoever shipped yours know how to properly pack stools for international shipping.

There surely is a way to make sure they are safely shipped both domestically and international?

Guys, everyone is entitled to their opinion on how they would handled things, I have been on both sides of a PayPal dispute many times, and it has always happened because of lack of communication or basically a scam, period.

You can resolve a lot of issues if people just talked openly/clearly. By Tony waiting 2 months after receiving his items, it’s a bit excessive timewise in my opinion regardless of what PayPal allows. He could have contacted Rancor first and then if the issues he had could. It be resolved, he still had his backup to go through PayPal. That’s what I think about it, simple as that. If for whatever reason he did not like the stools, he can sell them forward to someone else. Also, we have yet to see pictures of the damage to the stools?? What exactly is the issue? Everyone has already said, that because of the way these are packaged from factory for shipping, they could have possible damage/bent legs, but nothing to the extent that anyone has had to return them or be compensated afaik.

I have sold/purchased thousands upon thousand, actually an embarrassing amount of money for this hobby, and the transactions that always leave a sour taste on your mouth are the ones from people that chose to do stuff like this, instead of just communicating the issue first.

Personally, I would not sell anything subject to PayPal protections rules, don’t care if you pay the fees. I will sell/buy from reputable members, simple as that if I’m dealing with high prices items.

My comments are not an attack on anyone, this is my opinion on how I am seeing what’s happening here. Shit happens, tempers flare, etc...I say move one from this and take it as a learning experience going forward.

WELL said @Derick2k !

This is good information to have! I personally never heard that from any of the sellers I was looking at purchasing on. None of the group buyers mentioned it either. It may be fair to say if you sell these stools, you need to be making this disclosure up front in your product description so that folks new to the hobby like tony and I learn these things that all the rest of you just inherently know.

Thank you for sharking that @Derick2k I learned something today.
