OK, let’s open this can of worms. Last night, I read through the entire Namco 246/256 thread looking for information about an issue I’m having with my Time Crisis 4. While reading, I noticed Taiko no Tatsujin being mentioned many times.
It’s a game I love, but I always assumed it was out of reach because of the price. However, it sounds like—with the right parts—it may be possible to build a home setup using arcade hardware.
So here we are: what parts (hardware and software) do I need to build a home Taiko no Tatsujin setup? Are there any guides available, or someone knowledgeable I could talk to?
Thanks in advance for any information that can help me go further in this new rabbit hole.

Cheers and Happy New Year 2026.

Well, I am no expert on Taiko no Tatsujin, but no one else has chimed in, so here goes:

What you need at a minimum? A copy of the game and dongle, a Namco 2X6, 2X6 IO, power supply, monitor, speakers, 12 switches, a way to actuate those switches. That's it.

Anything past that is a matter of how ambitious you are. I've built a few western cabinets, but never attempted a 00's Japanese cabinet build. A peak at the owners manual might give you an idea of how to create the drums if you want to get deep in it. Personally, I'd start with one of the Hori home versions and make a fancy schmancy enclosure for it.

Anyhow, good luck!

For your reference, this is a simple Taiko No Tatsu equipment. The accessories are easy to find, but the wiring method is not clearly visible. Let experienced players help us solve the puzzle together.

I'm still on the look out for the system 256, it hard to find the games board

Regarding the controller, there was a guy in China making as close as possible replicas of the arcade controller and selling them on TaoBao. It seems that he's making it easier for Western audiences to get the controller and has opened (what seems to be) his own direct sales website:
https://www.dj-dao.com/en/taikoller

(He offers also Nostalgia, Pop n Music and other Bemani home controllers.)

After looking for a minute. I can’t figure out how to get to the main board under the whole thing seems riveted.

I haven't touched a 256 in years, but if it's like other Namco boards, it's on a tray and it will slide out.

Three screws on the front t face, remove those and the top slides forward and up to dislodge it.
