CCC: M302NEO Adapter (Micro Edition) - Interest Check / Wait List - OPEN FOR ORDERS

@here Have been doing some heavy testing with the M302NEO code and prototype PCBs and trying to isolate an issue.

What I need to know from everyone interested in this adapter, is if your M30 is a older model (with Micro USB charging port) or the new model (with USB-C).

It seems with the newer model they've made some changes to the firmware on the DB9 dongle that's causing intermitent issues and throwing UDLR inputs on boot and continuously cycling them... It happens about 60% of the time, power cycling CAN fix the issues, but that's not acceptable IMO.

Here's a visual of what's happening, thanks to the visualisation on the HAS Supergun.

It's not related to the actual gamepad, nor supergun, but the actual dongle itself. This doesn't happen with the older M30, even with the latest firmware. That's totally stable... It's just the current USB-C model that's causing headaches.

Still trying to make sure this controller / dongle isn't faulty, but throwing this out there to see what M30's ya'll have in the meantime while I continue on trying to isolate the issue. Wired pads work with zero issue whatsoever.

Have tried 2 different USB-C M30's with the same issue. The issue also happens on Mega Drive consoles in the controller test ROMs.

My M30s have the micro USB charging port - thanks for the work on this and hopefully the USB-C quirks gets sorted!

I have some of each. In general I find the older ones work better. I have had compatibility issues that I can't exactly recall but I remember being frustrated by the newer models.

I also find the quality to be a little inconsistent on the new ones.

I feel this is the case also. I had one arrive DOA. Got this current one that's giving me issues, and have another on the way. Absolutely ZERO issues with previous M30's -- I think the USB-C ones are a recent model thankfully.

I also just did some more testing, and it seems like the USB-C one also has trouble on the Mega Drive, especially with 6-button games. None of the controller test programs detect the other buttons (and I've manually switched it to 6B mode). No problems with micro-usb version.

I don't want to dive down a rabbit hole too deep for this issue, especially when 8BitDo can seemingly break things with a hardware version or firmware update that's generally out of my hands.

---------------------

With all that aside, I have a 100% solid release candidate, ready to release and sell, that works flawlessley with the micro USB variant of the M30. It will have manual switches for the button swapping and autofire on/off by holding start+button.

What are you guys on the list's feelings on just getting those made for sale.

Truth be told, I wanted these for myself originally, but ended up scoring 4 of Frank's adapters from someone locally... so this very much is a labour of love project at this point to help others out.

Thoughts? I can have something ready to sell in the coming month or two -- it will work with wired MD pads and the M30 micro-USB version.

The caveat being that USB-C M30 controller support is not 100% confirmed, and may or may not work.

I don't have any M30's yet, so I don't know what version I'm going to end up with if I buy some. So I'd maybe prefer to know USB-C worked. Happy to bow out if you just want it done and dusted.

This does match up with my experience with some Retrobit controllers that have the same issue handshaking for 6 buttons.

@SNK-NEO-GEO @bodgit: easy, have removed you both from the list, thanks for showing interest and sorry I can't deliver to your needs at this point.

I've edited the initial post to limit support for this adapter strictly for Micro USB M30 which is extremely stable, so I'm sticking with what I know will work forever.

@bodgit -- There's probably a reason why there's no Mega Drive adapters that support the wireless / 6-button pads. Unless you're checking every single one on the market and every single firmware available to their adapters and pads, there's bound to be "improvements" to the firmware / hardware that break things. These pads are made to work with real hardware, and not adapted to other systems, and that's where the problems lie. For example, the mode button (that is mapped to COIN on this adapter, is also used by 8BitDo to change modes on the controller).

I wish I could promise a solution that supports everything, but it seems not possible at this point and is likely to break down the line. Last thing I want is to ship out a bunch of adapters and have them not work for ya'll.

Given people are jumping ship early on, while I'm still doing testing and isolating issues, and also the fact this was a personal project that I personally no longer need. I'm going to follow through and do just ONE batch of these and call it a day.

For people who expressed interested, please re-confirm if you still are interested in the adapter (will only support micro USB versions of the M30): @Kujako, @astro_zombie138, @tika, @9999 Damage, @CoinFeeder, @GumGum, @glstar, @Dex74, @hoagtech -- let me know and how many you want / don't want.

Will keep this interest check open until the end of March, and I will tally up how many are needed and get them manufactured.

2 questions — Have you tested Krikzz's Joyzz, or any reason to think it wouldn't work? Also is there a reliable way to ensure you get a micro-USB M30?

No. Unfortunately I do not have that pad. If it's not the M30 Micro USB edition, consider support as only a "maybe".

The new M30's with the USB-C officially suck. I got another in the mail direct from 8BitDo. Went straight to the Mega Drive... doesn't even register a full 6 buttons in the test software (I have tried manually switching to 6-button mode too)

Micro-USB M30 (I have 6 of them to test with), abolutely zero issues. 6 buttons on all controller tests.

If you are looking, check eBay for lightly used ones and just ask the seller what cable / connector it has.

@djsheep is there any the adapter won't work with a standard wired Genesis/mega drive controller?

Apologies if that's been answered already.
They work fine. The mode button on 6 button pad is used for coin up. Switches work fine, etc.

Theoretically. It’s just this bad batch of USB-C M30’s that don’t even work on actual Mega Drives that are bung. This is going to cause a lot of headaches if 8bitdo don’t update the firmware and issue a notice IMO. There’s Reddit threads and feedback on Aliexpress with others having issues, so seems like it’s beyond anyone’s control at this point.

By the way, for folks looking to figure out which boxed M30s are microUSB, I believe that the back of the USB-C models says "Black Edition - 81CA" and microUSB just says "Black Edition"

These have been produced and manufactured for the 4 members here who requested them. Thanks to @hatmoose for assisting to make this product a reality and for his fantastic skills and super clean finishing work on the items he makes.

Each adapter has gone through thorough QA/QC checks between NZ and Australia and are ready to be sent out. PM's have been sent.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for chiming in and for their support! Looking forward to feedback when you guys get your packages! If anyone getting one had USB-C M30's, I'd be keen to see if you see what I see on those on your end too.

My receivers arrived today and I had a chance to try one of them out.

It works great. Very responsive. Turbo function is excellent. ABC/XYZ swap is fantastic.

I give them an A++++. My new favorite adapter.

@djsheep - thanks for putting this together.

As an added bonus, my m30 USB-C (version 81CA) model works perfectly with it.

When I got this controller, it had trouble on my Japan Mega Drive model 1 VA1 console. It also didn't work with other DB15 adapters I already had.

I recall updating the firmware(s?) and resolving the issue. I am pretty sure I updated the receiver firmware too, but more on that in a minute.

I wanted to check my firmware versions, so that I could report what is working for me.

The controller is running version 2.06.

I can't tell what version the receiver is running because it will not show up in the RR_tool.exe application or as a USB drive in windows.

Windows just sees it as a USB Game Controller.

I did some research but none of it was helpful. Model stamped on the receiver PCB is MD24G/V10.

I really wish I could share the info. It would be cool if more people could enjoy these if there is another production run.

I have some m30 BT controllers w/Genesis BT receiver that I will try out over the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback @GeorgeSpinner, I'm super glad you like 'em. Keep the compatibility checks coming.

I'm going to investigate updating my USB-C 8Bitdo to the firmware you suggested.

I did have issues getting firmware onto the dongle. Do you remember the process for that? The infos online is conflicting. I think I tried connecting it to a Windows machine and it didn't show up as a USB drive, and I couldn't get the official 8BitDo software to recognise it either.

Either way, it's a win that it works for you, if others who got this batch chime in and have the same level of success, we could "possibly" find a firmware that works with the adapter and remove the "micro" limitation.

Thanks for the support!
