I recently received an order of AM27c4096 eproms from China. They look like new, but my guess would be they are not. I have seen how they can take them and make them look like new, etc. Anyway, my problem is that they will not write. I have erased them completely twice. I run a blank check and they are indeed blanked, but upon trying to write to them, they immediately error out. Is there a way to verify what exactly kind of eproms they are? Perhaps they are not even AM27c4096 chips at all, which is why I am wondering how I would go about determining what they are. I informed the seller and they immediately apologized and refunded me my total paid, so I am not out anything. Any thoughts?

Sure enough, used some acetone and they are AM27C1024 chips. I don't think I have had a call to use 1024 chips- what are the equivalents?

Don't think I've ever found a need for 1024s, the only thing that uses them is MVS bios and then I usually just use a 4096 (with a 4x image).
I wish I'd thought of this last week... Couldn't find a 1024 anywhere, gave up and ordered one.

same here. I saw an snk stickered 4096 on a 6 slot once and I've used 4096s ever since.

I don't understand why they would re-brand chips to something totally different. Obviously the end user is looking for a particular chip and isn't going to be able to use these for the purpose they were ordered, etc.

It's really sad, but at least you didn't get bogus capacitors. I've seen some crazy caps that aren't what they're labelled, and could have caused serious harm.

Do you mind revealing where you ordered the EPROMs?

The seller is adeleparts2010 on ebay- I bought 10 of them and 8 of them turned out to be 1024's, but (2) of them look to be what I ordered, but they still coated over those. I have to verify those (2) to be sure, but there was no extra stamping on the these like the others.

If you're still looking to buy, I've bought several different lots and types of EPROMs from jk_parts on eBay. SpeedPAK shipping so it's well tracked, arrives reasonably fast, and I've never had an issue with quality or misrepresentation.

I just received some M27C4002 yesterday that have been working so far - they're equivalent to the 4096s that you tried to buy.

Yes, I have had good luck with them too. This time I had decided to put in multiple orders of the same part just to see what might come sooner, or who may have the better chips, etc. This is the first time I ended up with bunk chips though.
