CPS2 A-Board Smells Like Game Center/Cigs

Sorry about the board Joko :unsure:

For what it's worth, this thread is still good for future folks who may be dealing with the same issues; saves from making a new thread all about "how to get the 80s funk out" every time somethings a little smelly :P

My go-to (aside from the usual simple green wipe down) is Gain scented drier sheets! Rub the sheet just a little to break the stiffness and throw a bunch in a bag with the board and let it sit for no more then a day. Doesn't need to be air tight, but does pretty great for for me in getting the old mothball smell out of Ebay things!
 
I think in a few months I'll come back to it and see if I can redo the JAMMA edge properly or possibly try to consolize the board just for the experience. Got nothing to lose and either option would be a great thing to learn.

Edit: Has anybody ever reapplied the gold coating before?
 
My NEC PC-TV455 (old CRT monitor) from Japan used to have cigarette smell. Aftrer use it for a month, the smell gone. No worries.

Oh how I wish that I could take this very good advice.
I have a nigh-irresistible urge to mess with stuff. Normally this means it is either Perfect or Ruined, my spares pile would be much smaller if I could accept Working Fine Don’t Mess With It.
 
Learnt early on to not mess with something that’s working. If it stops working, then by all means I clean it or resolder it to look “nicer”.

9 times out of 10 if I take action on something that ain’t broken, I break it. This has happened from simply cleaning the dust off a PCB with a Q-Tip. Murphys Law.

One of the things I love about this community and forum in particular is how amazingly helpful people are in sharing information as we all learn in this hobby.

Really sorry about your board Joko3 and appreciate the advice man. I have some cabs/boards that have that old arcade smell and have lifted over the years but it's still there and I know I would have probably done something like this if you hadn't shared the mistake and result. I hope you're able to repair it successfully and would be interested to know what that looks like if you do attempt it!
 
i could have removed that nicotine.
nevermind.

now about vinegar - that i use every week.
you use it ONLY for destroying alkaline crystals that come from nicad battery leaks.
and you only put it on the board for 10 - 30 minutes.
then you wash the whole board with dish washing soap and boiling water to get rid of it and any dirt.
followed by serious rinsing under a tap or a shower head and forced drying.

Hahah, i am also guilty of this.

Also guilty of this. It's incredible how aggressive the smell is when you don't smoke. I can smell a cigarette being lit up over 50 feet away.
When I smoked I had no idea how badly it permeates the air around...

The smell on my old cabinets is halfway between nostalgic and annoying.
