Game: Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness
The label on the B-board ROM says CYBJ. I used an Arduino to restore the key.
The only Japanese version in the MAME ROM set is cybotsj, version 950420.
It boots up, but the startup shows 910020 instead. Does anyone know what this means?
Also, the background and text are glitched/distorted on the Capcom boot screen.

It looks like data bit 2 is stuck low related to tiles. Perhaps is just being caused by a bad connection between the A and B boards.

Hi master, I’ve been following your table to fix the keys. I have too many B boards, so I’ve taken apart 34 of them. Many show a red screen after key injection, probably due to wrong versions or incorrect ROM labels.

For example, Super Street Fighter II X: Grand Master Challenge — this is a B board with the original Capcom tamper-proof sticker, but the ROM label inside says SFZ. I’ve tried all keys starting with “S” and none worked. I’m confused now and don’t know what game this actually is.

If you can't figure out which key, the best option is to dump the 03 eprom and see what rom set it matches up to in mame. If it doesn't match any known set in mame it could be a undumped version or there is something wrong with the eprom.

You should also consider you could have issues beyond a suicided board. The first 2 pictures where you are showing the tamper sticker you can see some type of liquid has been spilt on the right side of the board. In the next 2 pictures with the programmer you can see numerous traces that are corroded, any of which could be preventing the board from working even with a valid key injected.

It wasn’t battery leakage in the photo, just spilled water that spread out. I tried it again and injected sfza—it booted up, but the version number shown on startup was 950727, which is the Japanese version. Strangely, it only works with sfza (950627); when I re-injected sfzj (the Japanese version), it only showed a red screen.

This is all really weird. It’s a Street Fighter 2X shell with the original tamper sticker, the ROM is marked sfz with no suffix, yet it only runs when I inject sfza. Just like with Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness I mentioned before—using a mismatched key lets it boot, but the correct matching key causes a red screen. Could the files in the Arduino tool be corrupted?

The one with the red tool is just a reflection of the monitor’s red screen.

Perhaps that sfz is just an undumped Asia version of the game. In general a key will work for all versions of the same game that are for the same region.

The weird 910020 version showing up on your Cyberbots is from the missing data bit 2 on tiles that I mentioned in the 2nd post. Its trying to display 950420 but with the missing bit its getting displayed as 910020. This is also why the text/tiles are all weird in your screen shots.
