Hi,
I recently got a Darksoft CPS2 Multi Champion Edition... It's just a dream!
I am running the Encrypted Roll-Up.

I noticed that when I turn-on the board after a while that it's been off the volume setting reset to 0 and I have to turn up the volume from the switch on the board.
That won't happen turning-on the board after a few minutes that it's been off.

The board does start anytime with the last game played and with the "free play" mode previosly set though (?)

Any tips? tx

Yup. Change it out (making sure you have the polarity correct) & your volume issues at boot up will disappear.
Thanks! I will try it!

By the way, I have to set anytime the "free play" mode when I change the game. Do you know if I can save the settings to more then just the last game played?
Perhaps the SuperCap could fix it too?

(Test has been done with the Max Volume set and running the Darksoft Multi)

Hopefully anyone could explain where is the issue:

- Original CPS2 C18 Supercap:

Volume levels not saving after powering down.
Good sound quality either from the Jamma output and Stereo Amp output.
Non-responsive volume controls (perhaps they always been like that as the "Menu" button works well). Let say accettable, I can live with it.

- 1st attempt - 0.1F 5.5v Electrolytic Supercapacitor:

I didn't fit well because the shape but I gave a try.
No luck, I got bad sound and I replaced the original Supercap in the mean time I was waiting for a new Supercap.

- 2nd attempt - KR-5R5V104-R - 0.1F 5.5v Supercapacitor:
KR-5R5V334-R.jpg

Fitting well and saving the volume set.
No sound from the Jamma output (audible a very low signal only with the ear close to the speaker)
Sound from stereo Amp output only from the left speaker.
(Non-responsive volume controls - as per the original Supercap)

- 3th attempt -KR-5R5V334-R - 0.33F 5.5v Supercapacitor:
KR-5R5V334-R.jpg

Same as per the 2nd attempt:
Fitting well and saving the volume set.
No sound from Jamma output (audible a very low signal only with the ear close to the speaker)
Sound from stereo Amp output only from the left speaker.
(Non-responsive volume controls - as per the original Supercap)

At this point I don't know what else to try (?)
Where could I buy the exact original Supercap?

Perhaps I will solder back again the original Supercap and that's it! Also, I think I am stressing too much the solder pad...

do you have enough voltage on your PCB ? Do you have 5V at the edge connector?
If it is lower music can also drop.

Did you confirm continuity after you installed it?

Can you try de-casing the board, then boot a game, enter the sound test menu, and test it there, directly pressing the volume buttons by hand?

Did you try holding down VOL UP+TEST with the power off, then power the board up while holding them down? That should reset the volume settings, and may fix your problem.

Good luck.

I didn't do it to be fair. I was a bit lazy to check the diagram... do you know where to check the continuity for the C18?

I put back the original battery yesterday night and was working well with both Jamma and Amp outputs.
I checked it this morbning and It's giving the same faulties as per the new Supercapitors previously installed: no sound from the Jamma output and sound just from the left speaker with the Amp output.

Perhaps the issue is the solder pad. It is not taking any solder in the last 3 battery installations. It's been stressed a lot especially during the desoldering process.

I will try to solder again a new Supercap with the board de-cased and see...

Any idea about how to jumper the C18 Supecap in case?

Can you take a photo of the cleared pad areas front and back after you remove it next time?

If it’s not holding solder, most likely the pad is lifted and you’ll need to run a patch wire somewhere?

Hi B.
I will!
In the mean time, do you know where coud I find the Board A Diagram?

I supposed to mark this thread as "solved" today, but it's still not unfortunately...

Here are photos of the solder pads. I have also marked in red the only continuity found
component side

Like mentioned previously, pads don't hold solder any more now (they started to degrade after the second desoldering process...), so I soldered the new Supercap from the conmponent side this time

Continuity indicated in the first photo was ok. Also the board worked perfectly yesterday night with both Jamma and Amp outputs.
Everything seemed solved...
I did a fast test this morning and got the same issue:
amp output - sound only from the left speaker and a low noisy signal form the right speaker
jamma output - no sound, a very low sound audible just with the ear close to the speakers.

Also, before change again the Supercap yesterday, I moved a bit the existing supercap while the board was operating but I didn't get any changes.

I am still thinking the issue is the Supercap installation as the board worked with no issues before I started to do all these replacements test.... perhaps I will try to give another solder at the component side and see....

It looks like you've lifted the pads :(

Does anyone here have CPS-2 schematics where he can run jump wires to?

I got the continuity between my + pole and R20 but I don't know how to chek if the - pole is getting power. Perhaps is there the problem (?)

In the schematic the negative leg is going to ground, which is common for cap legs. You can try jumping it to any other ground point.
