The original Japanese Vampire gives each fighter a pool of win quotes, and offers move advice on the continue screen after a loss. Darkstalkers, the USA version, cut that down to one English win quote per fighter and dropped the advice entirely, along with a handful of voices.
This is the Japanese game in English, presented as Darkstalkers, with all of it back.
What's in it
- Win quotes: every fighter's Japanese quote pool, in English, in Japan's bordered result panel.
- Endings: the complete Japanese ending dialogue in English, with the original scene timing.
- Continue advice: all 85 Japanese continue tips in English, with their arcade move commands.
- Voices: the ones the USA version muted are back. That's Morrigan's alternate victory, Vector Drain and throw, and Felicia's Rolling Buckler, Dancing Flash and special damage voices.
- The ten playable fighters and the Western character names, with Free Play added to the operator menu.
- As in the USA release, Rikuo's crouching heavy punch can be blocked with a crouching guard.
Every fighter draws from a pool of quotes again, with the Japanese hearts.
After a loss, the continue screen offers one of 85 tips, here Morrigan's Vector Drain.

First public release.Getting it running
- You need your own Vampire: The Night Warriors (Japan 940705) set,
vampj, merged, split or non-merged, as a .zip, a .7z or a folder. No game data is hosted. - The IPS kit patches it into the English restoration. It runs in MAME and HBMAME and on MiSTer.
- On MiSTer, the MRA kit adds it under
_Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Restorations. - MAME reports checksum warnings for the patched files. That's expected, and the game plays normally. HBMAME with the
vamprestset definition loads it without them.
This is a release candidate. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome right here. Tell me what you ran it on and what you saw.
