I bought a Strider conversion board (sadly not a CAPCOM JP original conversion) about a fortnight ago for $50. It is not working. When it is turned on, I get a black screen with stage 2 music playing. First thing I thought of was bad C board. Tested with another working B21 and same thing.

Then I had another thought; incorrect ROMs? I have a Jp FF board that had the 4 language ROMs changed to English (really irritating, wish it was 100% Jp and 100% original). I have another FF board with a strange fault that I will get to in a moment, I thought they were the same version so I swapped the ROMs (36,37,41,42 I think?) onto the Jp board so it had 100% original rom stickers at least. This caused the coin counter to go crazy and I just had a black screen with stage one music playing and Haggar screaming constantly. This kind of reminds me of the Strider issue so I thought there could be a ROM data issue? I don't have a burner to dump and test right now...

Okay, weird US or ETC FF board issue. Positive this is the C board because I swapped the board from my Jp board an it worked.

The error here is a sync issue, maybe? Only the bottom half of the screen is displayed, but on the top half of the screen. I get some colour cycling on the FINAL FIGHT logo, too which can be fixed by touching the C board. I would love to end up with 2 working FF boards (getting a third soon, paid for just need to pick up) by fixing the C board if posdible. I asked about this multiple times when I bought the board in late 2017 but got nowhere with a solution. I was thinking of re-flowing the B-04 chip. I also noticed a dodgy looking solder joint on top of the C board I want to fix once I get my new tools.

Is there anywhere else I should look to on the C board for this problem?

Thanks for the help!

I took photos of the problem and problem area on the C board but they are too big to upload here. I can send to an expert via email if need be. Or please suggest a photo uoload site.

If it can be fixed by pressing the C-board down with your finger, then the reflowing solder on the custom should do the trick. Usually a tell tale sign that an SMD pin has come loose from the trace.

okay, great! Thank you! I was planing on this being my first re-flow job! After I practise a bit, cough.

Could it be a pin that controls the display or sync? The dodgy pin on the top of the C board is 20 I think. First pin st the top left of tye board. There seems to be no pin coming through. I am just hoping the pin is not missing from inside the B/C connector. Hope that makes sense!

Edit: Just realised you may have been refering to Strider? Or really, it applies to both. The B-21 on Strider looks good and trying a different C did not fix it.

You know, aussiearcade is damn near the authority on CPS1 repairs.

If swapping with a known good (& compatible) C-board doesn't fix your problem, then the problem is elsewhere.

Swapping the C on Final Fight fixes it so I know that is the C board. Tye Stridsr, I have no idea! I will put out my SFII' Turbo board and try that C on Strider. I did not try a different A board, so that is another thing to try.

Tried with my SFII' Turbo board's C today, still black screen, this time with Russian speech, lol. I am thinking something is up with the ROMs. Especially as it is a conversion. Once I get a programmer I will check all the roms to see if they are correct.

Should have used my brain today and tested the Strider B-21 C board on my SFII' Turbo board to make sure it works.
