Error 15 and 25

Just got a Darksoft CPS3 set up. Worked perfectly the first time I booted it up. Now when trying to write a game it gets partway through the process and fails with either an "error 15" or "error 25". Could I have messed something up browsing around the menus? I've tried every game and reset the simms. Any ideas?

Browsing the menus won’t cause that error. Your error messages involve the two 64 MB SIMMS located in slots #1 and #2.

Before diagnosing a possible board fault, I would try cleaning the SIMM slots and SIMM edges on SIMM #1 and #2 first (take them out to clean both). See if that might fix your problem.

Error 25 means SIMM #5 is bad. try swapping SIMM4 and SIMM 5 and see if the error propagates with the SIMM. If it does, the simm is bad, if it does not, then the simm socket or some buffer in the mobo are probably bad.

OK, Maybe I remember wrong, I wasn't sure which one of the 2 digits indicate the simm slot. It's either SIMM 2 or SIMM 5.

If the percent of the game loaded stops under 30%, it’s gotta be one or both program SIMMS. My understanding is the first digit indicates which SIMM is bad/problematic.

FWIW I got an Error 60 once on a 128 MB SIMM that tested bad in slot 6 with your BIOS.

DS is correct, the second digit indicates the slot, so this is a problem with SIMM 5. First step is always the easy one, pull the SIMM and clean the edge with IPA. If you have deoxit, blast the SIMM connector with it. Then try again. If it persists, swap 5 and 6, see if the error chases.

I suspect the first digit might indicate which "pair" of flash memory is having the actual issue, but it doesn't seem like anyone has fully understood the error codes yet beyond the second digit mapping to the SIMM having problems.

My “Error 60” I once got wouldn’t even apply to your reasoning. My anecdotal problem was with Slot 6; hence why I believe the OP’s problem is with his program SIMMs in slots 1 & 2.

My understanding is that it’s the first digit indicating what SIMM slot is giving trouble.

@EvilMike what % of game load do you get to before you get these error messages?

There are numerous threads on here suggesting otherwise, and my own experience dealing with this (including a thread you yourself chimed in on!) supports the idea that the second digit maps to the slot. It's the only explanation for why the error would move with the SIMM.

OP never said he moved his SIMMS though (giving the 15 and 25 error messages).

I, like you, am trying to help someone new with what limited free time I have available & going off of what limited troubleshooting info we know about diagnosing problem CPS3 SIMMS. Please feel feee to keep debating this ad nauseum if it makes you feel better. I won’t bother replying.

Otherwise, OP should try to give everyone more info re: what % his game stops writing.

Gentleman, can we please focus on solving the problem? We are all trying to help and I think we gave enough information to @EvilMike so he can now get back to us and say what was the result of shuffling the simms both 1 and 2 and then 4 and 5.
After that we will be able to draw some conclussions.

Thanks so much for the help everyone. <3

Cleaned everything and got another error.

Results of swapping SIMMS
SIMMS 3 & 4 - Error 23 somewhere between 20-35% (Swapped these by accident)
SIMMS 1 & 2 - Error 25 at about 50%
SIMMS 5 & 6 - Error 26 at 60%
SIMMS 4 & 5 - Error 15 around 40%(+)

I returned the previously swapped SIMMS to the original places for each try.

OK, so errors will show in order. The earlier the better. If I recall correctly, first you write the gfx simms and then it goes for the program simms (that's 1 and 2).

From your information your problem is with gfx simms, so that would mean simms 4 or 5 IMO. The one giving you the fastest error would be telling you which one is bad. Do not touch simms 1&2. I think those are OK.

You didn't write when do you get the error initally before swapping the simms. Was it at 20%? 40%? 60%?

Right now looks to me like the simms or their sockets in the gfx section are bad. Probably both simm 4 AND 5 are bad or not make proper contact.

Is my best bet to just buy Simms? I see them for sale on ebay. Are they pretty much universal?

There are 2 type of cps3 simms basically. Some have 4 chips on only one side and they can only be used in simm1 and simm2 locations.
The other type has 4 chips on each side and you would need 2 of these IMO. If you have someone close to.you with cps3. You could try asking him/her to test them for you.

SIMMS I bought finally got here. Confirmed it was two bad SIMMS. Appreciate all the help.
