Hey guys, I am new to working on old arcade systems and stuff but at relatively inclined in all the systems involved as I am an aerospace engineer. The person I bought this system off of ran a business leasing them out to other businesses and he said it wasn’t worth his time to fix it. He said it just stopped losing the game one day. All the lights turn on and the board flashes a bunch of lights, but nothing sound wise or on the screen when turned on. Any ideas? Anything I should check for or test? Pictures are attached. I think it has had a LCD screen put in a while ago. But it has worked since then.

Update: I tested the screen and it does work when hooked up to an external computer. Color accuracy isn’t the best, but it can be changed.

The Dell PC. My guess the problem lies in either the GPU, RAM, motherboard or PSU.

You don't need to have it inside the cab to troubleshoot it. Once you have it booting to the game, put it back in.

Okay👍. I think based off what I am seeing, the GPU is the likely culprit, or at least I hope it is. I’ll take the PC out and apart today and see what I can find. The PSU looks fine and sounds like it is fine, but for some reason the disc drive doesn’t open? Is that an indicator of anything? All of this circuitry is so old I’m not super familiar with what I am looking at.

If I end up buying a new Optiflex 740 for it, will I just need to get the disc for the game software and download it onto it and plug it in? Or are there other modifications that need done? Idk if it has to have an identical motherboard and GPU setup or not? Sometimes these old programs are finicky with that stuff.

You will want to have the Optiplex motherboard. The other components don't have to be exact.

I'm currently running the game on an Optiplex with a 8500GT.

You will need to reinstall the game with the restore disc if you swap components.

I assume the restore disc isn’t inside the stuck closed disc drive? For some reason it won’t open and just flashes green and makes some noises when I try to open the disc drive tray. Should I find a restore disc online? Which version should I run? I’ve seen 3.0 thrown around a lot.

Did some testing on the computer and it looks like the motherboard is bad. The pc is showing a steady amber light on the power button which indicates bad motherboard on the online manual for the optiplex 740. I am gonna order a new motherboard for it, the link for the one I found is below. Do you think this is what I need to order? Does this come with the CPU typically also? Or do I need to order that too? General advice for what needs generally changed would be appreciated.

Just get a complete Optiplex 740. They're all over eBay. Don't look for a Drift motherboard specifically. You want the small form factor one. The mini tower also works, but you'll have a hard time fitting it inside the cab.

It should come with a CPU and RAM. GPU probably not, but I've read that you don't actually need one and the onboard video will work with the game (I haven't verified this).

Okay, I’ll just get an optiplex 740 off eBay then. Is there a listing you would recommend for it? Can I just swap the GPU I have in the current Optiplex into the new one? Will be interesting to see if this works. Does it matter which operating system it has on it? ie. windows xp vs windows 7? Does it need to have an OS at all? Also, here are some more pictures.

No, it doesn't need to have an OS on it. The restore disc clears the drive and takes care of that.

You can swap the GPU from your current one.

I would just choose the one that was the cheapest with shipping.

That works with me. I’ll order one and a restore disc. I’ll find version 3.04. I’ll let you guys know the result this upcoming weekend depending on shipping times. Very excited if this works. Haven’t played this game since I was a kid when I played Tokyo Drift every day for a whole summer.

That's not a 740 though. Listing says it's 755 or 760.

740 is Athlon 64, 755/760 are Core 2 Duo.

I haven't tried the game with a C2D. My guess is you'll run into issues, but if you've already ordered it, I guess there's one way to find out if it works or not!

Ugh. I wondered, it didn’t say what exact model it was on the listing, but it looked identical so I didn’t think much of it. I’ll try and cancel the order and pay the upcharge for the 740 model with the AMD CPU.

I’m not sure which chassis this is supposed to be based off the diagrams dell provided. Maybe this is the mini tower in the listing? It just looks to big to be that.
