While sorting out the last of the faulty CPS2 on my shelf, I got to an SSFIIX A+B set with multiple graphic/behavioral issues.
My first move was to check the main program EPROMs. While removing those, I noticed one EPROM had a pin broken off. Repaired that, but still multiple issues.
Besides the graphic corruption, I noticed that layer priority had an intermittent issue, sometimes lending to funny scenarios:
After inspecting the rest of the B board, I didn't notice any physical damage that might cause intermittent signal, so I looked at the pins on the A board and found an issue:
I cleaned the corrosion from the pin and the layer priority issue was resolved.
But I still had graphics corruption on some sprites. I grabbed another SSFIIX board and began by swapping the top daughter board. No change. I checked first graphics mask ROM (13). BINGO:
I burned a 27C160 to replace the bad 2Mbit mask ROM and sprite corruption resolved.
