Final Fight EX now runs on Capcom's CPS-2, with every enhancement from the CPS-1 version and more: a restored English version with added scenes, an improved translation and uncensored content.

The 1993 Sega CD port of Final Fight opened with a fully animated cutscene and closed with new ending scenes, over a soundtrack with spoken dialogue. Final Fight EX brings them to the arcade game. On CPS-2 the arcade's music and sound effects play through QSound, and on MiSTer the Sega CD's arranged soundtrack and voiced cutscenes come along too.

What's in it

  • The Sega CD opening as native graphics: the Metro City map, the Mad Gear line-up, Damnd's sketch and the knife, Haggar's phone call, and Cody and Guy.
  • The Sega CD ending scenes: Haggar and Jessica's reunion and Cody's farewell, plus Cody and Guy's talk in the mansion hall in the builds made from the Japanese disc.
  • An English restoration: the Japanese version in English, with the Japanese disc's cutscenes translated from the Japanese, captions that follow the voices and mouths that move with the lines. On MiSTer it has a new English voice track.
  • The Sega CD's arranged soundtrack and voiced cutscenes on MiSTer: the USA build with the US disc's voices, the Japan build with the Japanese disc's, and the English restoration with the new English voice track. MUSIC in the test menu switches back to the arcade music. HBMAME plays the arcade music, and the cutscenes keep their captions.
  • EX settings in the test menu: BONUS STAGE on or off, CUT SCENES SEGA CD or ARCADE, and ARTWORK ORIGINAL or ARCADE STADIUM, Capcom Arcade Stadium's revised soda can and Uptown sign.
  • REGULATION: chooses Jessica's outfit on Haggar's TV in the opening, the US disc's red dress or the Japanese disc's lingerie. In the Japan and English restoration builds it also turns the blood white.
  • A hidden stage select: hold attack and jump and press Start on the title screen to jump to any round, or straight to the ending.
  • A test menu in place of the DIP switches: coins, continues, difficulty, lives and extends.
  • GRENADE is spelled right on the HUD, and the USA story's typos are fixed.
  • Three builds: USA, Japan and the English restoration.

Getting it running

  • You need your own Final Fight CD disc image for the builds you want: the USA disc for the USA build, and the Japan disc for the Japan build and the English restoration. Give the whole disc, as a .cue with its tracks, a .chd, or a .zip or .7z holding one, because the MiSTer music is made from its CD audio.
  • You also need your own arcade romsets, as .zip or .7z: Final Fight (ffight, ffightu and ffightj) and Street Fighter Alpha 3 (sfa3u), which supplies the CPS-2 sound. No game data is hosted.
  • The kit puts the sets together on your machine and writes them out for HBMAME (ffex2u, ffex2j and ffex2r), for MiSTer, and as one game folder per build for Darksoft. It needs Python 3.11 or newer with numpy and Pillow, and ffmpeg for the MiSTer music packs.
  • On MiSTer, copy the contents of the kit's out/mister/ folder to the root of your SD card. It holds the CPS+ core, the sets, the music packs and one launcher per build under _Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Enhanced Versions (USA and Japan in their own subfolders). You need a 128 MB SDRAM module.
  • HBMAME needs the set definitions the kit writes compiled in. It doesn't run in stock MAME.
Full instructions are on the project page.

This is a release candidate. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome right here. Tell me which build you ran and what you saw.

The cutscene art and audio derive from Capcom's Final Fight CD. Fan work, unaffiliated with Capcom or Sega.

@strygo One quick question — I see the reconstruction kit currently generates HBMAME and MiSTer builds. Is a standard MAME/FBNeo build planned as well?

How would you expect it to work with regular MAME? I can look into FBNeo.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the technical differences, so I may have misunderstood it.

I asked because I thought HBMAME worked differently from standard MAME. For example, the USF2 kit specifically provides separate MAME and HBMAME/MiSTer builds, while the Final Fight EX CPS-2 page currently lists only HBMAME/MiSTer.

That's why I was wondering if a regular MAME build was possible too.

But thanks for looking into FBNeo! That's actually the one I'm most interested in. 🙂

Ah, yeah. USF2 is able to run on MAME in the HSF2 slot since its rom layouts match. I will check to see if one could work for FF EX.

Good news! I just tested Final Fight EX CPS-2 in FBNeo and it works!

I loaded the HBMAME ROMs through ROMDATA using the sfa3ud driver (Street Fighter Alpha 3 Phoenix Edition) as the base, without modifying the FBNeo driver.

So it looks like the HBMAME ROMs are already compatible with FBNeo as well.

Just wanted to let you know!

Cool, thanks! I have a pull request open on FBNeo so it should hopefully be fully supported in their next release.

Great! Most of your other projects are already supported in FBNeo as well.

At this point, I think the original CPS-1 version of Final Fight EX, the three Darkstalkers Arrange backports, and the extended 8 MB/CPS+ builds are pretty much the main ones still missing.

It's great to see your projects getting so much support in FBNeo!

UPDATE: I tested the English Restoration build in FBNeo now that the PR has been merged.

I noticed that the test menu settings aren't being saved.
