Final Fight EX now runs on Capcom's CPS-2, with every enhancement from the CPS-1 version and more: a restored English version with added scenes, an improved translation and uncensored content.
The 1993 Sega CD port of Final Fight opened with a fully animated cutscene and closed with new ending scenes, over a soundtrack with spoken dialogue. Final Fight EX brings them to the arcade game. On CPS-2 the arcade's music and sound effects play through QSound, and on MiSTer the Sega CD's arranged soundtrack and voiced cutscenes come along too.
What's in it
The Sega CD opening as native graphics: the Metro City map, the Mad Gear line-up, Damnd's sketch and the knife, Haggar's phone call, and Cody and Guy.
The Sega CD ending scenes: Haggar and Jessica's reunion and Cody's farewell, plus Cody and Guy's talk in the mansion hall in the builds made from the Japanese disc.
Console mode. A title menu with Arcade, Time Attack and Options (difficulty, lives and extra lives), play without coins, and a pause menu on Coin with Continue and Quit. MiSTer starts in Console mode; GAME MODE on the test menu's EX page switches between Console and Arcade.
Time Attack from the Sega CD: one fight against the clock in your character's Sega CD arena, scoring a point for every enemy defeated, with its enemy waves, results screen and record. A second player can join on the select screen. On MiSTer it plays the Sega CD's Time Attack music, and the pause menu holds the arranged music.
An English restoration: the Japanese version in English, with the Japanese disc's cutscenes translated from the Japanese, captions that follow the voices and mouths that move with the lines. On MiSTer it has a new English voice track.
The Sega CD's arranged soundtrack and voiced cutscenes on MiSTer: the USA build with the US disc's voices, the Japan build with the Japanese disc's, and the English restoration with the new English voice track. MUSIC in the test menu switches back to the arcade music. HBMAME plays the arcade music, and the cutscenes keep their captions.
EX settings in the test menu: BONUS STAGE on or off, CUT SCENES SEGA CD or ARCADE, and ARTWORK ORIGINAL or ARCADE STADIUM, Capcom Arcade Stadium's revised soda can and Uptown sign.
REGULATION: chooses Jessica's outfit on Haggar's TV in the opening, the US disc's red dress or the Japanese disc's lingerie. In the Japan and English restoration builds it also turns the blood white.
A hidden stage select: hold attack and jump and press Start on the title screen to jump to any round, or straight to the ending.
A test menu in place of the DIP switches: coins, continues, difficulty, lives and extends.
GRENADE is spelled right on the HUD, and the USA story's typos are fixed.
Three builds: USA, Japan and the English restoration.
The opening's Metro City map.
Haggar takes Damnd's call.
Haggar and Jessica's reunion in the ending.
Cody and Guy in the mansion hall, in English.
Time Attack on Guy's bridge arena.
New in rc3
Console mode. A title menu with Arcade, Time Attack and Options, and a pause menu during play. MiSTer starts in Console mode; GAME MODE on the test menu's EX page switches it.
Time Attack. The Sega CD's mode, with its arenas, enemy waves and results screen, and on MiSTer its music.
Industrial Area. Fixed a freeze.
The sets have new checksums, so rebuild them with the rc3 kit. Earlier versions are listed on the changelog.
Thanks @strygo I played through this today, the implementation for stage select is very clever, it's great being able to practice the later levels. With the arranged soundtrack this is the definitive version of final fight for me.
It already adds things like 3-player support, Q-Sound, reduced slowdown, more sprites and a lot of extra configuration options.
I think some of the additions from Final Fight EX — especially the Sega CD-style intro/cutscenes, extended ending and stage select — could fit really well into that version too.
Maybe even a modified title screen to distinguish it as Final Fight AE.
Final Fight EX is now on CPS-2. It has every enhancement from this version: the Sega CD opening and ending scenes, the new title screen and the hidden stage select. It adds a restored English version with added scenes, an improved translation and uncensored content, a test menu with EX settings, and on MiSTer the Sega CD's arranged soundtrack and voiced cutscenes. There are USA, Japan and English restoration builds. This thread stays the home of the CPS-1 version.
@Ipla: I opted for a separate build from the Anniversary Edition one. Mostly because I wanted to keep it consistent with the EX versions I've been building. If there are any must-have features you'd like to see, let me know!
Honestly, I think going with a separate CPS-2 build was an even better idea. It keeps Final Fight EX consistent with your other EX projects while taking advantage of the CPS-2 hardware.
The only feature that comes to mind would be 3-player support, but I imagine that's a much more complicated addition. You've already added so much to this version that it feels very complete as it is.
I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks for bringing Final Fight EX to CPS-2!
Time Attack from the Sega CD is in. It's one fight against the clock in your character's Sega CD arena, scoring a point for every enemy defeated, with its enemy waves and results screen. A second player can join on the select screen, and on MiSTer it plays the Sega CD's Time Attack music.
Console mode adds a title menu with Arcade, Time Attack and Options, play without coins, and a pause menu on Coin with Continue and Quit. MiSTer starts in Console mode; GAME MODE on the test menu's EX page switches between Console and Arcade.
I’m not currently planning to bring console mode (with these features) to CPS-1. It’s technically possible, but the lack of an in game service mode makes it clunkier.
