What's new

Going through the motions of *paying* to decap and dump a PIC16C621A Naomi PIC (.hex and .asm attached)

if you have not been poped for the pirated lindy multis being sold with your permission what makes this different? sorry i seem to be a bit slow with the whole concept of this piracy of the lindy system is alright but this other piracy is bad bad and we must never say its name.
No multi was ever available for download here. Your comparison is apples to oranges.
Forgive my ignorance, but I’ll bite... since we are seemingly chumming the waters with bait.

What happens when I PM you looking for a Lindy multi, what comes next? #AskingForAFriend

But no-one's downloading anything. You're receiving a HDD in the post in exchange of cash. It's different!

Anyway, you're derailing your own thread.

Indeed, I was just being pedantic, as the original poster actually said “multis being sold with your permission”. “Downloads” came after the fact, as we began splitting moral hairs :)

Alas you are right, I’ll stop back later in the month once I’ve acquired the keys in question, and have sent them off.

Several folks asked to donate, I won’t accept any donations for this. If you have a key you want sent off in the batch, PM me.

*salute*

We’ve got the same views on information wanting to be liberated.

Currently I have on deck a Naomi2 World Club Champion Football European Clubs 2005-2006 PIC key for a Satellite Terminal PIC to be slaughtered...

I have no PICs in hand for any other platform at this time. I’ve got several bookmarked for purchase... just have not done so. This includes Lindy and Ring* series. I have a random Chihiro I can toss in as well.

Likewise the WCCF is one of several permutations, I don’t have any original CF PICs that I’m willing to sacrifice.

Sending multiple off at once makes the most sense as the DHL / FedEx to get em sent out isn’t cheap. Worst case my plan was to do em a few at a time at my leisure.

Finisterre thank you for doing all this and the opportunity of the great debate which has not been resolved but will in some close distant future but done for now

Well, while not knowing too much about this debate, I think there are two things that we can all agree upon...

One is that the more games/systems that are made available to the gaming community the better.

Two is that nothing bad happens to arcade-projects.com

And not necessarily in that order...

:D

So to summarize what we can do here:
_ can post PIC codes. It will be usefull to repair our broken arcade games.
_ can post tools (frontends, HDD decription tools or methods...). Usefull, too.
_ no ROM authorized, of any age (even old).
_ already converted / hacked systems can be sold, even with a non legit game installed

So let's share PIC codes !

As I said before, I asked Sega Aracade Europe for repairing my games (olds PCB System & Model series, Naomi, Chihiro, Lindbergh) and they don't do it anymore. I asked to buy new replacement games and parts, they have nothing to sell me anymore. They can sell used cabinet parts if they have because on top of selling new cabinets, they sell used cabinets, but's it's not the same thing (and actually this firm is not realy "Sega", just a licence to use the name). Actually, I asked very recently to repair one of my RingEdge, and the answer was that's not possible anymore, too. So these systems are not supported anymore by Sega.
So if we want want to repair our games, that we legally bought, we have to share knowledge, cause Sega won't help us. I have got hundreds of arcade games, all genuine. And as I said before, I can't find any Lindbergh or older game still in use in arcade center here. I don't want to bootleg or hack, just to repair my cabinets!
@Darksoft if you fear hosting some files, I can do it. Not another website cause I like this one, just hosting files.

That's exactly the point.

Yes please use some external hosting site.

I'm afraid that's not allowed.

So to be clear... that one thread... with all the ROMs linked to Mega, is OK, as is posting links to ROMs linked on mega on other threads? (Such as “unlocked” game threads). Uploading the ROM here physically isn’t Ok? Interesting line in the sand!

naomi netboot roms

“Even with a non-legit game installed”, this is indeed the fine art of Hair Splitting That @werejag eluded to.

I was doing some reading today, and found Sega Enters. Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc., 977 F.2d 1510 (9th Cir. 1992) may be relevant reading for some here.

https://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/summaries/segaenters-accolade-9thcir1992.pdf

"The court held that defendant’s “reverse engineering” of plaintiff’s computer program qualified as fair use, and ruled that disassembly of a copyrighted computer program for a legitimate reason and lack of other means to access the elements not protected by copyright constituted fair use. Although defendant commercially sold video games, the court found that defendant’s copying was for a legitimate, essentially non-exploitative purpose—that is deciphering the non-copyrightable functions for game console compatibility. Any commercial exploitation of the functional code was indirect and of minimal significance. Along similar lines, the court found that defendant did not usurp plaintiff’s market because defendant served as a market competitor and created its own independent, creative video games. Noting that computer programs contain a mix of creative and functional elements, the court pointed out that defendant would have been unable to access the functional, unprotected aspects without “reverse engineering” and copying. The court stressed that without a fair use exception for disassembling object code, the owner of the work would have a de facto monopoly over the functional aspects of the work."

That is interesting and good news....but again, If they take this site to the court...who's gonna pay the lawyer fees?

Anyone can sue for any reason (at least in the US) legitimate or not. But if the reason is unfounded and they lose in court you can counter-sue for legal fees... So essentially they would pay your lawyer fees.

Ain’t that the truth, land of the bullshit claim lawsuits. I have 2 pending bullshit suits against my properties, I have manage to outright win one were we proved the mother poisoned her kid with lead in another country and tried to blame that my property had lead paint.

I have another one pending on a trip and fall claim where the person claims they broke both ankles by tripping near a tree well, I expect to win that also. Cause how do you break both ankles???

But the ones I love the most is the classic, The burned myself with the hot coffee I ordered because you didnt tell me it was hot and it didnt have a warning on the cup saying it was hot.

So yeah, anyone can sue for anything here. People will work harder to sue someone on fake/baseless claims than they would work doing honest work.

Sorry for the mini sidetrack rant guys, but when you have to defend these bullshit claims, and your insurance premiums go up or you get denied further coverage, shit like this really gets me going.

also to be fair IF you choose to NOT properly respond to a C&D, or DMCA takedown, etc... that is partially on you. @skate323k137 pointed out some of these nuances. IANAL of course.

I will tell you from my own *famous* dealings with DMCA and Hewlett Packard (in context of security research), https://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/07/31/hp_invokes_dmca_to_quash/, that the EFF would be the first group *I* personally consulted *IF* the contrived scenario you presented did occur.

I also know @fsckewe made a "donation" joke... but all jokes aside... donate to EFF
https://supporters.eff.org/donate/join-eff-today

I think everyone here would be a fool to think you haven't consulted a lawyer before delving into the hardware business you chose to run @Darksoft ;) I could be wrong though.
