Hi from Tokyo, Japan! I’m Hana Marty.
I’ve been obsessed with Metal Slug since the '90s—especially MS3, where I pushed past 10 million points. I even bought an MVS board back then to practice at home.
Fast forward to now, my arcade passion came back. While fixing my old MVS motherboard, I found this forum—and it’s been a goldmine.

Lately, I’m building a custom “CHA1024” cart using 32 × 27C322 chips, aiming to run Bad Apple!! on real hardware. I’m also playing with EPROMs for M1/V-ROM and sound demos with NeoSoundBuilder.

Looking forward to learning and sharing with everyone here!

Welcome. MS3 is a very cool game for sure. I have been to 25 countries and Japan is my fav to travel to. Been only to Japan twice but would love to go there again and explore. May be a road trip next time :)

Welcome, Just had a look at Bad Apple looks impressive, not seen it before.

What is bad Apple? Consider me intrigued!
And welcome

It's a famous song/video with its roots in Touhou that's also a demo that's been ported to many computers, consoles and even calculators.

Read more: "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Apple!!" (A-P is buggy and won't let me hyperlink the URL correctly, so just cut and paste)

Or watch this (narrator is horrible, but it ELI5 ok):

Wow, this thread really took off—thanks again everyone for the awesome welcome!

@msamiullah Totally agree, MS3 is legendary. Really cool you’ve been to Japan twice—hope you make that road trip happen one day! There are still a few arcades hanging on here.

@raidenmaniac1 Haha, 10M is just the start :)—always room to push higher.

@16bitgium Great question! Like @djsheep explained, Bad Apple!! is a famous song/video from the Touhou series that’s been ported to tons of platforms. For Neo Geo specifically, there’s an amazing demo by The Hpman that you can check out here:

.

Official Neo Geo carts are designed for up to 512Mbit C-ROMs, but I’m working on a custom build to push that to 1024Mbit. For the CHA1024 expansion, I added a new 74LS139 to control CE for each extended ROM layer. I connected the unused P23 line to the LS174 to latch A24, with the existing 74LS139 handling OE control via A21 and A22. A23 and A24 are wired to the new 74LS139 for layer selection.

This setup manages four ROM layers, arranged logically in a 4×8 grid—four vertical layers are selected by A23 and A24 (through CE control), and eight horizontal ROMs are selected by A21 and A22 (through OE control). Physically, the ROMs are stacked as two layers on the front side of the board and two layers on the back. Right now, I’ve assembled only the two front-side layers, and still need to wire up 10 more ROMs on the back side. So far, C1–C16 are working correctly, and about two-thirds of the demo runs fine on real hardware. That said, it’s still uncertain whether this logic will successfully control the full 1024Mbit as planned.

To everyone else really appreciate the warm welcome!

Welcome! Awesome MS3 score there. What is your high score with MS1?

I spent five years in the Tokyo/Yokohama area myself, and will likely be moving back sometime next year. I'm mostly knowledgeable about superguns, stick building, and console mods. Anything else is best left to the pros lol. Anyway, welcome aboard!
