Yeah, that's how open source projects work. But if you really want supports for more controllers or more arcade titles that require unusual configurations, you'd better to buy the original one so that the author don't lose his motivation. This isn't a retro thing, but a product that lives today. Your choice affects how the IONA goes in the future. Of course, it's a possible choice to fork the project and move the thing forward instead of him.

Originally, his IONA was based on Arduino so that anyone can build their own JVS IO easily. It has been his hope that more people enjoy JVS based titles easily, and users help him to improve IONA's compatibility. So the community has made IONA grow. Hope you also share the same dream, and deliver it for the community rather than for earning money. License doesn't tell everything.
