Selling my Korean Gunforce 2. These are legit boards made for the Korean market. Physically it looks like it’s seen better days, but works flawlessly. Sort of like a precursor to metal slug. Asking $260 shipped UPS in the USA. Due to my work schedule I can only do USA shipping at this time. Board is large and heavy so I will be sending it ups ground.

Dude, not to derail your thread, but I think that's a bootleg Korean M92 board. The "official" Korean ones looked like the Japanese ones, with different chips, but still have Irem on the board. Also, some claim that they don't have as good sound as the Japanese ones.

I think the bootleg Korean ones don't have the notch for the JAMMA edge, as an easy way to tell.

BUT, I'm also not an expert, so maybe @Apocalypse could chime in?

EDIT 2: Irem M92 - boot or not a boot?

Note that I DISAGREE with the conclusion of that thread by the way. I do think that the Korean versions with off PCBs (such as no JAMMA notch) are probably bootlegs, but I have seen "official" ones from Korea that look identical to the Japanese ones, but I have no idea.

Another theory I read was that because of weird Korean laws, Japan imported a few initially, with the correct PCB and made in Japan on them, they just had different Korean chips added, then after a while they started making these in Korea and that is when the "off" PCBs were used.

Either way, I have a Ninja Baseball Batman from Korea (and a Japanese one) and I can't tell the difference either, even the sound, so I would just say the only thing that may matter is that the M92 multi that is coming out may not work with this type of board.

@xtrasmiley it looks like the other Korean irem boards I’ve seen and owned, with nanao and Hyundai chips, not keyed, and looked like it survived an explosion. Haven’t noticed any sound problems but I’ve only made it to stage 3 on one credit. Either way, I’d love some feedback from @Apocalypse.

Yes, and I’m not trying to kill your sale thread. My Korean board works fine too, so there is that.

No-one knows for certain if they're bootlegs or not. Unless you have a time machine there's no way of ever finding out if they made these under license.

The price is very good. If I was in the US I would be all over it.

To me they are bootlegs:
- no notch on the JAMMA edge, making it impossible to use with my setup, and no I'm not removing the key in the connector, it saved my ass a few times
- poor manufacturing quality, very light and flexible PCB material, cheap parts

But sure nobody knows, all I can say is I've seen Korean M92s before and PCBs were identical to the Japanese ones in quality except for the parts used (and sometimes lack of heatsink on the audio amp). Maybe the ban over Japanese products in Korea is an explanation for the change in the manufacturing process.

Easy enough to cut a notch in the board. It's not like it will devalue it.

I've never seen a Korean M92 ROM board that looks like the Japanese one. My Korean Ninja Baseball Batman has a motherboard that looks like the Japanese one, but the ROM board is cheap looking, just like the one in the OP.

Hey, since we are shitting up this poor guys for sale thread anyway (I know, I know, I started it!), can you start a thread where you post pictures? I'm curious how it compares to the ones I have, which are sadly in storage and I need to dig out!

This is pretty shitty. There is no proof these are boots and with all do respect to Apocalypse, the board not having a notch doesn't mean it's a boot.

Most Korean boards are shitty quality wise as well.

While there are many region versions of games out there that share the same pcb as the origin Country, there are plenty that don't. Especially Korean boards due to the history between both Countries.

I'd say with respect to the others, everything has been more focused on opinions than hard facts. Some of these pcbs just lack the history or info behind them. A lot of Korean version hardware in the World is noted using cheaper components and substandard manufacturing.

This happens every time one of these pops up. I caught a lot of hell over the Undercover Cops I sold a while back for the same reason. Mine was like Apocalypse said though, where it looks identical, just different branded parts.

I don't believe they're boots. Some people do. No one will ever actually know. What I can say is they work 1:1 with the JP/World "official" versions, and they're a hell of a lot cheaper usually.

No worries, I specified this was only my POV by starting my sentence by "To me". :)

What's strange to me (again ;) ) is all other Korean boards from that era are identical to the Japanese ones (again except for the parts used) and have the notch.
Like Korean S16 or C2, etc.
An other strange thing is some of those weird M92 boards use a different sound CPU than the Japanese version, with patched/modified sound ROMs, like if pulled parts had been used and program adapted to whatever encrypted sound CPU was available.
Maybe OP can give us the sound CPU ref so we can check if it's a match or not.

Devaluate a bootleg? Sure not. Anyway I don't collect or repair bootlegs, they are worthless to me and have none in my collection.

So, yeah, it exists.

There were two large sqaure chips with stickers on them. I removed them, not sure if they are the chip in question:

One says "Irem" and the other says "NEC Japan"

Thanks, sound CPU is on the first picture, reference matches Dream Soccer '94.
