Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter kept a lot from you. Outside Japan there was no Norimaro. Nowhere could you play as Cyber-Akuma or Apocalypse, or put the same fighter on a team twice. The console ports later added extra colors and more speeds, but only at home.
EX gives the arcade game all of it. The fighting itself is untouched, with no changes to moves, damage, hitboxes or the computer.
What's in it
- Norimaro in both builds, with his own ending.
- Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse are playable, each with a spot on the select screen. Their special moves work on the Easy control setting too.
- Hidden versions of every fighter with a two-second Start hold, no codes needed, though the old codes still work.
- Any team, including the same fighter twice in a different color. Only one Apocalypse is allowed per match, so his stage stays intact.
- A new English translation from the Japanese: sixteen win quotes per fighter instead of eight, and all seventeen standard endings, plus Mech-Zangief's, Shadow's and Dark Sakura's.
- Two extra colors per fighter from the Saturn version. They carry through portraits, intros, special moves and hypers, and stay with your team for the whole arcade run.
- U.S. Agent, Mephisto and Shadow get their names in the fight HUD, which the original game leaves blank.
- M. Bison's Hyper Combo is Knee Press Nightmare in every region, the name Capcom has used since Alpha 3.
- Console mode. A title menu with Arcade, Versus, Training and Options, and a pause menu in every fight (Coin, or hold Start). Versus is against a friend or the computer, with a stage choice, then Rematch or Change Characters with the wins kept. Training sets the computer's action and guard, both gauges, speed and stage. Options cover difficulty, speed, damage, sound and a time limit of 25, 50, 75 or 99 seconds, or none.
- Eight game speeds instead of three, and Free Play in both the USA and Japan builds.
MiSTer starts in Console mode. MAME and HBMAME start in Arcade mode. GAME MODE on the service menu's EX page switches between them.
- Hold Start on any fighter for two seconds and their hidden version appears before you pick.
- Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse are on the select screen, with no hold needed.
- Pick your fighter with HP or HK for the two Saturn colors.
Norimaro is now selectable.
Hold Start for two seconds and the hidden version appears before you pick.
Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse have their own spots on the select screen.
Console mode's title menu.
Versus setup: a friend or the computer on either side, and the stage.
Console options, including the time limit.
New in rc5
- Console mode. A title menu with Arcade, Versus, Training and Options, and a pause menu in every fight. MiSTer starts in Console mode; GAME MODE on the service menu's EX page switches it.
- Select screen. Cyber-Akuma and Apocalypse have their own spots, instead of a Start hold on Akuma or Norimaro.
- Versus names use the arcade's own lettering, centered, and wrap to two lines when long names would crowd the middle.
Getting it running
- You need your own Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (Japan 970707) set,
mshvsfj, merged, split or non-merged, as a .zip, a .7z or a folder. No game data is hosted. - The IPS kit builds both the USA and Japan versions from it. They run in MAME and HBMAME and on MiSTer.
- On MiSTer, the MRA kit adds both builds under
_Arcade/_Arcade Patches/_Enhanced Versions. - MAME reports checksum warnings for the patched files. That's expected, and the game plays normally.
Credits
Thanks to RQ87's Norimaro inventory, which mapped what the export versions changed. himanito's earlier Unlocked MRAs in Arcade Offset covered some of this ground. EX is an independent implementation. This is a release candidate. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome right here. Tell me which build you ran and what you saw.
