I find them irritating tbh, I've never clicked on one. I'll see there's a new post to a thread like this, click it, and discover it's contentless video spam with zero context and close it.

I might if awbacon1 provided a little copy telling me why I might be interested, and acted like you were actually participating in the community, but as it is it feels like you're just dumping your content hoping for monetized clicks.

This thread isn't very active and I do find out quite a bit of info from @awbacon1 videos. Not just related to MiSTer.

I don't find them to be contentless, at all. He has some really great hardware, and it's cool to see them in action. He's very knowledgeable about the topics he posts on (or he, at least, comes off that way). I also like when he does direct comparisons.

While he might be trying to get a streaming following going (for all I know he already has one; no disrespect intended), it seems his main motivation is his love of all this content from yesteryear. If you watch the videos, you can tell that he loves games.

I don't know if that's really how he talks, or if he's going for an ASMR vibe, but it's something else that's unique about his content. It's definitely different. Not in a bad way.

Oh man, this. Nothing worse than seeing this thread got bumped and all it is is a paste of a youtube link with no reasoning behind it outside of "Mister". Spamming up threads that generally contain actual information with content for the sake of making content is frustrating.

I see people divided on this forum over key points that I see both sides of.

@awbacon1 is contributing the broad topic of Mister and arcade by sharing the latest videos. His videos are of latest core builds and arcade releases. That's pretty on topic to the Mister thread. And setting up the mister was difficult and his video is the best way to get your Mister initialized.

However he is not replying to anyone and can be seen interrupting the conversation as he is derailing whatever discussion is happening by dropping his videos over peoples conversations.

Also his posts are not created for AP and are shared on all his social platforms, including FB, Twitter, and other forums. I don't believe he is making any money with his subscribers at this point so I don't see it as spam as its not pushing profitable advertising.

The solution I discussed with others is to have a mod @Mitsurugi-w create his own section where he can update to his hearts desire about latest releases and broad topics. The only ethical issue is he's not breaking any rules currently so why should he have to?

@awbacon1 If you agreed to share all your videos in your own section you would solve this for good. I recommend you do so as some battles aren't worth fighting in life IMO

This is a large part of the problem. It's just throwing them here for advertisement's sake, and not being any part of the discussion at all.

I'd go so far as to say that near-daily links out to one's youtube with no participation in the thread (and barely in the community as a whole) could be viewed as spam. Which is rule number 1.

1) Do not Spam. (Overly repeated questions, outgoing links etc.)

Then there really is no reason to spam this thread with every video when he already has his own dedicated thread for it...

Maybe we can get a mod to weigh in on this? Lots of opinions, but none of us make the rules. @Mitsurugi-w @Darksoft

Oh trust me. I’m not making money off this 😂 I do it because it’s what I enjoy doing. It’s certainly not my job even if I make a lot of content.

Whatever money I make goes into acquiring more stuff to show on the channel / dump and share. Really I barely even cover my expenses.

One thread is fine. Doesn’t bother me. I contribute where I can. Sometimes that’s teaching people FPGA stuff, sometimes that’s teaching PCB repair / reverse engineering Konami security shit, sometimes that’s dumping undumped games and general preservation and sometimes it’s just doing a “hey this game is good. Go play it”

I pop into threads when I have useful info and I have two members boards here / on the way currently to get them back up and running. People don’t see that but I help where I can for the fun and love of arcade stuff. I also leave threads when I manage to repair / rework something that has no info on the process.

So I’ll slam that all together in one thread and everyone can be happy. I’m not the boogeyman after all. At least I don’t think? Haha

Thanks for the tip but I really enjoy finding the videos in the various threads.

I'm not a big user of YouTube or any social media.

I feel that @awbacon1 videos do contribute to the conversation. They are all on topic. I really appreciate them.

I don't think it's self promotion because I don't think he really even talks about himself. He just promotes the things he loves.

The guy has almost 1600 posts. It's not the most ever but I think it counts as participation.

Unless he has almost 1600 videos... I haven't done the accounting.

It's hyperbole. Exaggeration intended to make a point. But the point you're contesting wasn't even really the one that was the focus of this conversation. Posting the videos while contributing absolutely 0 to the discussion was my (and several others') point of contention.

But now that you've got my curious, after hitting "Show more" a bunch of times in their post history: by eyeballing, it's roughly 10:1 video posting vs actual posts.

And for whatever record, I don't have anything against @awbacon1 and I wish him well in his YT endeavors, I just find that the way they're posted muck up the discussion. Seems a bunch of others agreed.

I’m looking forward to having a single section to find obscure consoles, Mister updates, Unported arcade titles, and more in his dedicated section

I understand what hyperbole is. I don't think it's an effective way to prove a point.

I always thought the video was part of the discussion. Like if someone posted a how-to in a thread with a broad topic (like this one). It doesn't require a back and forth. It's just information that people can appreciate (or not).

Maybe it comes down to what a person expects from a forum. For me, it's (probably 99%) about the information.

I'm glad @awbacon1 will have somewhere (on arcade-projects) to put his videos.
