Hi all, got a MK4 board that reports "Error 0A - Sound System Error - SRAM Failure" on boot, after that it plays fine, without sound.

When it displayed that message it did bong a few times, so that would at least mean the DAC and AMP would be ok.
Began by verifying the sound roms with a XGecu T48, all gave good checksum.

Before replacing what the error message says is failing, I tried to check if other ICs around could be causing this issue. Since there are no schematics available, poked around with a multimeter. Found that:
  • The nearby 74ALS244 is not related to sound
  • The nearby 74FCT162244 acts as a buffer for addresses and control signals of the sound ROMs.
  • Sound SRAMs are directly connected to the ADSP-2104 by resistors. Also their ferrite beads are fine (unlike some UMK3 boards where I've seen them give up)
  • If U2 ROM (1st sound ROM) is not installed, then the diagnosis reports "General Failure", that means the ROM contains the main sound program, and it is possibly being read fine.
  • If all other ROMs but U2 ROM are taken out, then the same SRAM error shows up.
  • Also, did the same test but from a working MK4 board: Having only U2 ROM installed, error message points out which other sound ROM is missing (because it succeeded the SRAM test).
So seems the sound program does: initialize -> then verify the SRAM -> then verify the other sound ROMs.

This gave me a bit more confidence to go try replacing the SRAM chips. Unfortunately I didn't have any spare ones in the parts bin, so I had to remove them from the other working MK4 board (will have to put them back later). Also the error doesn't point out which chip is bad, so will have to replace all of them (3).

Both MK4 boards have ISSI IS61C256AH-15J (32K x 8 SRAM, 28 PIN SOJ)

Began by marking the ICs from each board with a pencil to not mix them up, then masked the area out with Kapton tape, and then turned on the hot air station and removed them all.

After taking all them out, on the destination board: cleaned the pads with solder wick, applied soldering paste, positioned the ICs, and soldered them with hot air.

My solder paste application wasn't the best, and upon testing it didn't work. By checking each connection with the multimeter found some unsurprisingly unsoldered pins, soldered them manually with a fine tip. Checked again with the multimeter, and turned it up, initial diagnostics passed successfully (all green), and sound started coming out!, that was it. Repair done. :D

Now I just need to order some of those SRAMs, it could be any brand, but the cheapest I could find are basically the same model, just updated (lower power consumption, better speed support, industrial temperature, etc.): ISSI IS61C256AL-12JLI

@MagicianLord77 Did you ever get to test it with the new SRAMs?

I'm facing the same problem with a mk4 pcb I bought as non working... I solved some other problems the board had, but now I'm getting this error with 10 audio "bongs"... Game boots and runs with no sound...

I have allready ordered the IS61C256AL but I was wondering if it worked for you?

Thank you!

Hi XaryC, yes, I soldered those new faster ISSI ones in the board that I had taken its SRAMs from, it worked perfectly. I don't remember exactly how many bongs the board was doing but I think it's good to try replacing them if you're having that symptom. Also when soldering those I tried using a knife tip to avoid having to mess with solder paste, kind of drag soldering around the leads, it is tricky in the tight space of the board but it also works, I liked it better :), good luck with the repair!

Also, as an update to the original post, the ISSI IS61C256AL-12JLI have been discontinued (can't find them at Mouser anymore), but CY7C199D or AS7C256A (in -15 or faster speed) should work the same.

Allright, thank you for the heads up!

I'm not doing the soldering myself, it's too tight as you mentioned... My brother will do that, he's an electronic technician, but I will pass him the info! Thanks!

I found the ISSI chips at digikey... I hope they're alright?

I will let you guys know how it turned out!

Sure they'll be fine, I guess Mouser ran out of stock first

Unfortunately, replacing the SRAM cips did not solve my issue... Or I'm having bad solder joints too... I checked the power and GND pins and all chips get 5V and GND is connected properly.

Do you have any more info on whats connected to the SRAMs or where to check next?

Thank you for any help! :-)

What does the boot screen says about the sound system status? any message?

Same as yours... Error A0 with the 3 sram chips in red... The rest of the sound chips in yellow... And the message Sound system error, sram failure. Exact same screen as the openings post.

Game runs fine otherwise...

I burned new sound roms just to be sure, but no luck there either...

Very weird, I can't think of anything else more than testing the old srams that have been taken off the board, if they work then they weren't part of the problem, but if any fails then there could be an issue with the soldering of the new ones. If not try find diagnose related components.. unfortunately there are no schematics for the board :(
