i hate those boards,
i always rub the skin off my fingers trying to get that foam pad off the bottom of the battery area!!

If you can stand the stench, heat them up with hot air. Much easier. But again, the smell is horrible. Foul. Extremely unpleasant.

My 2 cents on the repair: the 74HC32 in the battery area is a Toshiba part -- the Fujitsu of SMDs -- and it's likely it's dead(ish). When it fails it causes backup RAM access errors as it is used to select the chips for access.
