Could I replace the OEM battery with a LIR2032 without having to remove the 430Ω charging resistor?

LIR2032s are rechargeable, IIRC.

Yes, but not without some degree of risk. The Neo Geo will be providing 5v to recharge the 3.3v battery. This is outside of the specs of a LIR2032. While I have never seen a failure, it is possible that the over voltage could cause the battery to fail catastrophically.

for example: this one has a 4.2v maximum charge voltage.

Hmm... that's good to know.

The LIR2032 just isn't worth it. It's difficult to install correctly and keep charged. You're much better off with a non-rechargeable CR2032 coin cell, which will last years.

Can you point me to a good CR2032 holder? Obviously I only need 1, but Amazon has a ton and I want to make sure that it would fit.

There's a resistor before the battery. Charging voltage should be around 3.7V.

I have rechargeable lithium coin cells in most of my Neo boards.

Update: The CR2032 I installed in my MV1C in 2017 died earlier this year. 2017-2026 R.I.P.
