If it's not the buffer chip, where would I look next?

good move is to find out is it upper board problem or lower, or both. you need one more and working DIMM to do this.

btw, can you tell us a story of your's DIMM ? is it was bought at ebay from Chinese seller as non-working or non-tested for cheap ?

I sold him the DIMM. I’ve had it for years in my setup. Never used it for a Netbooting, just GD-ROM use. I eventually stopped using it when I moved to a Compact Flash based DIMM setup.

While I was using it, I switched between 2 Vewlix cabinets. One with the Wei Ya JVS supply, I would see the Error 22 on occasion. I could get past it by adjusting the voltages and reseating the DIMM on my Naomi 2.

On my second Vewlix cabinet where I used a Sanwa JVS supply with a different Naomi 2, I never had a single issue.

I never opened the case until I went to to test and list them for sale. I had to open them to verify the amount of RAM installed as there is no other way.

Beyond that I don’t know the history of the DIMM. I had owned it for near 8 years or so.

unfortunately I don't have another game to try or anything and probably won't for a while given money is really really tight right now...
