Hey there. I'm still very new to arcade set ups and have been trying my best to read, learn, and understand. I'm interested in the Naomi and really want to get it hooked up with a net dimm.

My struggle at the moment is specifically on power requirements. I have a MWP 606, but my understanding is that 3.3V is required. I also have a capcom i/o. From what I've read, it sounds like this isn't enough. I've heard of mods to the capcom i/o to accommodate the net dimm. I'm not sure what consequences this has though nor do I know how to do it.

Is my only option getting another power supply for the net dimm itself or is there a better way? If I do need another PSU, is there a recommendation on which one?

I appreciate any help.

Edit...

Also if anybody has a net dimm for sale I'd like to know. Thanks!

One option is to use a PC ATX power supply. Supplies all the correct voltages and has plenty of power to drive everything (the Naomi and attached accessories such as the net dimm).

Easy to make an adaptor cable yourself or if DIY isn't your thing, Mitsu sells pre-made cables.

So another psu is the way to go. Is there a good place to read up on using one of these and how to build the cable? I'm still not the best at DIY but happy to learn.

There's not much to it really. Just google the Naomi and ATX pinouts, buy some wire, JST VL connectors and crimp pins, put it all together.

Haha. I appreciate how easy you make it sound. Being so new I think I'm a bit too out of my comfort zone to just throw something together.

Put it into baby steps.

Grab some 16AWG wire and a crimper and have fun assembling.

Or buy one pre-made: ATX-2-Naomi Power Adapters

I really do appreciate the baby steps. Sorry for being a nuisance and a noob. It seems like it's a common question and I'm sure you and others with this knowledge get sick of answering it.

Honestly though. Thank you.

Happy to help!

Not a nuisance at all, I'm just too time poor to neatly lay it all out and present it all.

If you look at the Digi-Key listing for the VL connectors, in the associated products section you'll find pre-crimped wires to suit those connectors. Saves you half the time, as you already have the JST end crimped and need only crimp the ATX side.

Note the PS_ON pin of the ATX connector. This needs to be bridged to a ground pin to turn on the ATX PSU.

Also note that you can select different crimp pins for different gauges of wire. I've linked 16AWG however you could also use 18AWG which is more than adequate.

You may run into issues also with modern ATX power supplies that require a load on all power lines, or they regulate the output. I faced issues with multiple ATX’s including good brands like Corsair.

Finally settled with an older ATX which works no issue.

Anything thing not mentioned in the making of the ATX to Naomi cable is that you should populate multiple lines to the +5v and +3.3v or you could face issues.

Both these things are documented elsewhere and further on this site.

I'm not going to lie, I feel kind of stupid not being able to pick out a power supply. Ideally, I'd like to use Mitsurugi's ATX->Naomi cable so a small modular power supply seems best. It just seems like there's a lot of threads out there about things not working but few about recommended ones. I could also just be entirely incompetent at finding the right thread.

I'd appreciate recommendations but I know people have probably talked about this endlessly at this point.

Its definitely worth searching the forum for more info. I usually use Google, as the search function here gives me lackluster results.

I can recommend Mitsu’s ATX2Naomi cable, myself and many others have used it with no issues. It may also save you the hassle of ordering the individual parts and tools if you’re new to this.

You could try your luck with any PC ATX PSU you have around, or actively hunt tried and tested models.

Good luck, it’s a friendly bunch here, so don’t hesitate to ask for any advice or info you can’t find!

Pico ATX works great! Super compact too.
Finally looking into this a bit more and I had another super quick question. I have a MWP606 PSU for the HAS Supergun. If I was getting an ATX Pico PSU, can I simply draw its 12V input from that or are there concerns there? I'd basically buy a barrel connector, cut one end, and crimp fork terminals to it. Good idea or nay?

I don't know how much current is drawn for the Naomi 2 so I'm left wondering which PSU to buy which will indicate if the MWP 606 is sufficient.

-Edit-

I just found that the Sun PSUs provide 12v 2A and 3.3V 12A for a total of 64 Watts. At 115 watts, the MWP 606 seems like it's up to the task. I hope that's enough to power something like a 150W Pico PSU though. Worst case scenario I can just buy a 12V 10A supply.

So the higher amperage 12V you supply to the Pico, the higher amperage the Pico is able to output.

2A should be adequate and would be the bare minimum.

3A comfortable.

5A plenty with room to spare.
