New NEO-GEO Aes will be released ?

Games ordered on Amazon JP, just because I think the covers look better than the EU/US. And actually a better deal for me not living in EU, I will only pay VAT once (and not twice like when ordering on Plaion's shop).

That Japanese cover reminds me of the old PC Big Box games, especially games like Links.

So... one thing I'm seeing being raised as a concern is a lack of RGB output. The specs list "AV for CRT enthusiasts" but not s-video or RGBS. If that turns out to be the case, I may consider canceling unless the HDMI can output 240p.

AV = audio and video. It does not refer specifically to composite video (or any other format), though some people believe that because composite input was often labeled A/V (as it was the only audio/video input on a lot of sets).

There is no way on earth that the analog output will only be composite. I would be worried if the back of the console had 3 RCA jacks as the only analog output, but the render clearly had a DIN alongside the HDMI and USB C. It would be totally nonsensical to put in a DIN that only outputs composite, especially when the original system outputs RGB.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that they have removed the "Max 330 Mega Pro Gear Spec" that both the original console and stick had below the Neo Geo logo.

Another thing that would be a complete turn off is if the game cartridges are too light. It's one of those things that defined the Neo Geo, those big, fat, heavy cartridges.

Pre-ordered the white version- I'm a sucker for white consoles 8o

I will enjoy BTG/NTM on AES for $90 instead of $20,000; even if it's light.

This is a huge concern for me as well.

They can easily add code into the BIOS to detect if the cart is not one of the 156 known games, and not boot it. UNIBIOS has been able to detect what game is booted 20 years ago.

Be for real, why would they even bother to do that? I can promise you, at $90 a pop they're not making much of a profit from the games if any at all.

If its truly 1:1, then anything that would run on a real AES would run on their recreation. They're claiming "No Compromises", only being able to run games with officially released NGH numbers would be a BIG compromise.

Does anyone know the internal details? I'm worried that when I receive it, it might just contain an FPGA chip, and if it's not the original circuitry, that would be terrible.

It's not the original circuit as 1:1 from an original AES. It's an ASIC reinterpretation.
Will it be good enough? No one knows, but it might well be since Furrtek and Jotego have been somehow involved.
BUT if there is a fuck up in design, as small as it might be, then we're stuck with. An FPGA would have opened the door for updates.

I'm afraid even SNK/Playmore/whoever don't have that information anymore.

They claim the cartridges are also compatible with the older AES, but it's impossible to manufacture these cartridges using EPROM chips now. My question is, what will the read speed of these new cartridges be?

I'm kinda baffled that people try to poke holes in the cartridges of all things. There were multiple developers in recent years who released NeoGeo Cartridges which to my knowledge simply worked so why would this now be an issue? (And no they don't all use old parts, the gladmort pcb is only half the size of an "Old" game )
Yeah Garou has potential for a disappointment because of the encryption but when i look at the retro developer front in recent times I'm pretty sure that would be realistically solvable. Hell with the knowledge/tools available right now people are cross porting old Games for "shits and giggles" (or did anyone really need Mario64 for Dreamcast) so that should most certainly be doable.

You can't compare Gladmort sold at 380€ or other Pixelheart releases of older games like Neo Drift Out sold at 300€, to the 80€ games that make the lineup of the AES+.
Yesterday, on a French retro stream, one of the managers of Pixelheart was in the audience and confirmed that it would be completely impossible for them to produce AES carts with shockbox and manual for that price. They make a limited profit at those prices, so 80€ would definitely be at loss.
Of course, we are not talking about the same volumes, but as already mentioned Plaion is really taking a risk here and counting on quite high sales compared to what the Neo Geo market has seen in the past decades.

You mentioned it yourself but i believe you massively underestimate the economy of scale. Of course pixelheart wo rely on Crowdfunding can't compete there with an operation that potentially has the god like power of Saudi money in its pocket (this obviously depends on how the operation is structured, did plaion only license from SNK or did SNK pick them to do the whole thing for them)
But don't get me wrong I'm not saying this will work, you obviously have to be stupid to not worry about over promising products in the retro gaming space, but at least to me the Carts seem to be by far the most realistic part of the whole thing. The stick's being low quality, the compatibility of the console not being as promised, the HDMI sucking or the (software) options for the picture output being trash, sure. But the Carts are "simple" with less space for true variance, if you put them in a Console and they work you basically 95% there (at least as long as we aren't talking about LRG…).

*About the Saudi money, just checked plaion and they are owned by Embracer which supposedly got scorched by Saudi Money so not sure if I'm still counting on that…
