Bit of an odd one, but I need a Japanese Ninja Assault cart, one that specifically shows Japanese text during the attract mode. For very particular reasons, I need the attract mode text to not be in English. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Mike

Just a heads up, the language is determined by the bios on the motherboard and not the cart itself.

Thank you! I've been getting some conflicting reports on how to get this to work...in that case, what can I do to get the Japanese to show up? I've set the bios to Japan (all four dip switches off on the otherboard), I have a multibios and a netdimm loader alongside an actual cartridge ASIA version of Ninja Asault (which, at least in the MAME romset DOES contain the file needed to make the game run with the Japanese attract mode.), and I've tried changing the language ingame as well. No luck on getting any of it to show Japanese in the attract mode.

In flycast, only the ninjasltj (NJA1) shows the text. Is there a way to trick my physical Naomi hardware into thinking that it needs to run that version of the game?

I'll also post this thread in support...probably should've tried that before. That said, if anyone knows the answer and it IS somehow hardcoded on a cart, please let me know if you have said cart, haha...

Upon further investigation, apparently some games have their region coded on one of their ICs? If that's the case, then it'll ignore the mobo's region settings just like it's happening to you.

Can't seem to find concrete info regarding Ninja Assault though, hopefully someone can shed some light on the issue, now I'm curious as well haha.

This person has “NJA3” and it’s showing up English, and I would suspect they have a JPN motherboard as their base board. Even they were surprised to see the game in English when they probably thought it their motherboard is supposed to force the language change.

I think Hokuto could be correct where the region is coded to a specific IC within the cartridge.

Yeah, I think that's the answer, unfortunately. I've found someone with a Japanese Ninja Assault cart thankfully, but it's kinda frustrating that they are region locked like that. Being able to switch to Japanese text while retaining the green hitmarkers would've been the perfect combo for my usecase, but gotta settle for what I've got, haha.

Just out of curiosity, on the netboot version of the WORLD Ninja Assault bin, do you think it'd be possible to change the region via hex and have it work (i.e. so we could theoretically have both green hit markers and Japanese text)? I tried that and text still came up english, but I'm also extremely new to that sort of hex manipulation, haha.
