Hello all,

I recently setup a naomi 2, 512MB netdimm with 4.02 firmware, a capcom JVS I/O with supergun, video going into an OSSC, and pi3 with piforce web by Chinksin.
Everything is working well and all games that I have the controls for work fine with the exception of any of the virtua fighter 4 games, I am using the Gakman files from mega, but they all boot to a black screen and the test button doesn't work either when on the black screen like they've crashed.
I am using a multi-bios and have tried all regions but get the same results.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can try, is it possibly the capcom I/O or maybe I need to change some assignments prior to booting?

Thanks for reading and hopefuly a guru can assist!

Thanks.

I know this version works, I have used it on my Naomi 2 fine.

Thanks,

I checked the SHA sum and it does not match, I got the version I have from Gakmans megaupload folder, can you verify if that version work or not please?

my SHA1 sum on the extracted bin file is: 5B385F6B26FEF97A769581769FEB3319F39DD52C

Looks to be the same

I use the multi region bios as well, loads in JP and US mode fine. Only gotcha is both are in Japanese since it had no US release.

Hi sammargh,

Thanks for checking, can you let me know which JVS I/O you are using?

I have literally tried every ROM of VF4 I have now, and all BIOS regions, and they all boot to a black screen without the test button working, so i'm not sure if its a hardware or software fault, my best guess is it doesn't like the capcom JVS, but as far as i can tell the capcom should be fine with VF4.

Right,

I think I may have sussed it!

Can I ask which BIOS you are using please?

I bought a real VF4 cartridge, I have a multiregion BIOS, uses dips 2/3 for config, in JAP it gives error 02 which is expected i think as its a US/EU cart.
Switching to US/EU or KOR I get the same black screen as with the netboot, so i think the BIOS is the issue?

I use the multiregion bios and flip between Japan and USA mode. I haven't tried any roms other than final tuned which was Japan only but I know it boots in both modes

Check bios to make sure you got the right settings configured. I set my Naomi2 to US.
Also, I know it's a bit of a total facepalm, but have you checked your voltage?

I was trying to shoe-horn my Naomi2 into my MVS cab just this last weekend.
I had to give it a good bump in voltage in order for the Naomi to turn over with Virtua Fighter.
After I got it cooking right, I was reading a nut-hair below 5.09V on the Jamma edge to keep it stable.

512MB v4 NetDimm Naomi2 -> Sun PSU on 6 pin, Capcom IO on 8 pin -> Jamma cable to cabinet.
I gave the cabinet voltage a bump, not the SUN PSU.
I can't seem to figure out how to get the SUN to turn on by itself with only the JVS capcom IO connected to Jamma.
In the current configuration, it turns on and supplies voltage when the cab lights up via Jamma power.
It'll run all day in that configuration.

Thanks for the comments!

I have an EPR-23608B on the way that i will test with the setup as thats what the guy that sold me the vf4 cart tested it with, so fingers crossed that works, should be netboot compatible as far as i can tell as well, but arguably less compatible than the JAP vresion.

I haven't tried the voltage tweat as the UK psu i have doesn't have voltage pots, but I will measure the output with my multimeter when i get a chance and see what its registering, suposedly it has auto trim on the psu but you never know, I may just have to get a real sun psu if i can and a stepdown transformer.

Thanks for the ideas, i'll update when I get the BIOS.

I've reitorated in other posts in the past about Voltage.
A good 80% of my Naomi2 / Naomi issues were inadequate or unstable power.
I was using a cheap ATX PSU to power it from a Supergun to Jamma to Capcom IO to Naomi.
That never worked great.
I almost ALWAYS ran into issues.

After that I switched to Jansen's Customs ATX to Naomi adapter.
That solved some problems but i still was unable to tune voltage.
Most games would work, and others wouldn't.
Sometimes there would be a hit and miss with titles which made no sense.

After upgrading to a good dual PSU solution, that solved about ALL my game loading problems.
The Naomi is hungry with this configuration. Feed it right, and it'll dance.

Thanks for the reply,

I'm still waiting on the bios, but I should probably mention what power setup I'm using.

At the moment I have a supergun connected to the capcom jvs with its own atx PSU, and another separate PSU going to the naomi.
I got the PSU from an arcade repair place here in the UK, I looks like an atx that has had the standard molex replaced at board level by the naomi, gdrom, and what looks like marquee connectors.

I measured the voltages and they are all in spec as far as I can tell, 12.2 - 5.22 - 3.34 with a cartridge in, and pretty much the same in the netboot setup config.

I'm just hoping for whatever reason the bios is the issue as power seems OK, but you never know!

I'll update once it arrives.

IC22 contains the checksums, so that's why it's --. Your cart looks fine.

Thanks for the confirmation nem, I appreciate it!

Also the bios arrived and I fitted it but still no joy.

Well, it looks like my N2 simply doesn't like any virtua fighter 4 games then!

I'm all out of ideas now. :(

Ok,

So finally sussed it, the Naomi 2 was essentially in limp mode, one of the GPU's or its RAM had issues causing it to essentially become a Naomi 1.

I was unable to repair the board, but I have bought a new machine and it it working fine with everything the previous one was not, so bad board.

Thanks for any and all help from people.
