An American twin OR2 cab came up for sale by me recently with a crazy price tag. This is one of my favorite games so even though the price was high, I had to at least go take a look at it. I'm glad I went to check it out because I ended up getting really lucky. The machines were advertised as working, but when the guy turned them on only one side was booting and it was stuck looking for the other machine on the network. The other side had an error 26 and wouldn't boot the game. I've dealt with that error when doing 0 pic keys before so i figured I could fix it pretty easily. Because the guy couldn't get the machines to play he ended up going way down on the price so I couldn't say no....
I picked up the machines a few days later and quickly realized the amount of work that these cabs needed. Someone really jankified these poor things. They have some really bad 19" LCDs with spray-painted cardboard bezels. Those will get replaced with CRTs ASAP.
Someone drilled a credit button in the dash at some point, and then glued the original piece back in?
Oh and one of the coinboxes won't come off because a bolt is sheared halfway off, plus half of the bolts are the wrong size. Several broken buttons and a ton of missing screws all over.
The one piece of good news is that the chihiro with error 26 ended up being an easy fix. All I did was push the PIC key in further and it booted right up.
I was able to play the game at this point and it did work. The force feed back seemed a little loose, but it was technically working. One thing I noticed immediately was that the speakers sounded terrible. I decided the first thing I'd do is pull off the bezels to see how the speakers looked. Plus I really wanted to rip those LCDs out.
No wonder Magical Sound Shower wasn't sounding so magical. I have a blast city with the same style speakers that I replaced before, so I'll do the same with these. I'm really surprised Sega was still using these speakers when OR2 came out.
The early stages of the de-jankification process have now begun. One of the dashes was about an inch further forward than on the other cab. Looks like whoever put this thing back together after LCD-ing it didn't bother to do it correctly. The black duct tape on the sides of the LCD is a nice touch though.
The "bezel" that was around the LCD. I am in awe at the craftsmanship.
Looks like this machine spent most of it's life at a movie theater. Found several tickets from various years and a ton of tokens for Andretti Speed Park....I have to say, OR2 really seems on-brand for a place called Andretti Speed Park.
Well, that's it for now. The next step will be to recap both chihiros, remove the clock caps, and replace the fans. I'll be working on this project often and I'll post again when I have more to share. Thanks!
