The older Plasma monitors that are EDTV or 480P native should be setup up well for 640x480 games I would think and they don't have any lag issues as per the LCD monitors due to the Plasma technology - is this correct? So how would a plasma monitor with native 852x480 (EDTV) work with Sega Naomi and newer hardware in terms of quality and to provide a "CRT-like" performance closer to a CRT due to the lack of lag and how they typically work? Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

IMO 480P content doesn't really benefit from CRT in terms of still image quality. the only real benefits of 480p on CRTs is low lag and access to large 4:3 displays.

Early Plasmas were better than early LCDs in terms of lag, but they did have a lot of ghosting/image retention issues that people felt were bad for gaming.

At least with a native 480p display you wont have to deal with any scaling issues.

Thanks for the reply. I figured having a native 480P display would help and the picture quality would generally be very good?
In terms of lag; I get confused as I have heard Plasma in general doesn't have lag issues versus LCD and are close to CRT in that regard. I am not sure, but that is what was said online in some forms in regards to the Plasma technology and the only negative was burn-in and the tendency for images to burn-in relatively easy; especially with the older versions. It seems Naomi and above will look decent on a widescreen display with there is no scaling involved; thinking of giving it a try anyway.

You can always try. Personally I can live with lag while gaming, but not with ghosting..

I'm using a 37" EDTV Plasma, model number TH-37PWD7. The Dreamcast and Naomi look fantastic, it even downscales 1280x720 down to 480p, so PC steam games and fighters look great on it as well. I mainly play KOF XIII on steam, but is also compatible with the calamity drivers for GroovyMame. I used the 31khz settings and got myself a scanline generator and things look and play marvelously.

I don't notice any lag, though I don't play any rhythm games to put it to the real test.

If I were to complain about anything it would be that the screen door effect can be noticeable on some games, and the contrast ratio isn't the best on it for dark games like Resident Evil or the likes. Anything bright and colorful looks fantastic, though.

Thanks for the reply - glad to hear someone has some experience with the EDTV plasma and the Naomi and it looks good. Sounds like I will give it a try; I also picked up the mini SLG to go with it and anxious to see how it works. Thanks again for sharing your experience with it.

there is lots and lots of misinformation on line about lag. unless you've seen the results of an actual lag test it's best to assume that the lag is a big unknown. unless you're playing rhythm games, or you're a competitive SHMUP or Fighting game player who knows exactly how the timing is supposed to feel in specific games it's very difficult to actually detect lag and even in those scenarios it's impossible for someone to determine how much.

I've talked about this at length before. the leonard bodnar tester is your best option for lag testing, and the Rockband 2 guitar is you're most accessible option.

You shouldn't need an SLG for 480p content... 480p content isn't supposed to have visible scan-lines, even on CRTs. the Mini SLG is for adding scanlines to 240P content that has been upscaled to 480p.

as i said.. forget about lag..

your problem is/can be this:

There are quite a few 2D games on the Naomi, Dreamcast and PC that utilize the Scanline Generator very well, as they are upscaled from 240p/480i to 480p. Capcom vs SNK 1/2, Marvel vs Capcom 1/2, on steam KOF 98 UM and KOF 02UM are good examples.

Also I don't notice any ghosting on my model, I'll have to pay closer attention next time and see if there is any.
