Poor man's Candy Cab?

Well if you’re 100% set on building your own, I highly recommend checking out the BYOAC forum (build your own arcade controls), which has a TON of information and project threads of scratch-built cabs.
Not trying to push you outta here, it’s just that forum is dedicated to building cabs from scratch. You’ll get way more builders chiming in and guiding you through the process.

I do, I just like to save factory harnesses.
Get this set of pre-crimped .110 terminal wire.
It will go perfectly with my encoder suggestion (ie only one end is terminal crimped for the button, the other pre-stripped ready for encoder).

Also, YES .110 is what you want IF you are going for "candy" (aka Japan) arcade experience like Sanwa and Semitsu buttons.
The .187 is for American woodies and buttons like Suzo/Happ or IL.

Don't worry about the joystick harness, it will come with the stick in most cases (example Sanwa JFL).

The perfect reply. Thank you so much.

An excellent functional way to get most playing benefits of a candy cab on the low cost side would be to get a desk link SNK-NEO-GEO linked to, and then get two XBOX 360 or PS3 usb joysticks like the Street Fighter IV tournament edition controllers. With a MiSTER you can output component video and then get a JVC D-Series 27" TV which accepts component in. (I have maybe 100RGB monitors of various brands and the JVC D-Series and other 27" rounded component TVs have a near identical image quality to a K7000 monitor). Make a couple frame shims so you can sit the TV vertically or horizontally (if you like vertical games too) and you will be pretty good to go. You could also get a computer to output component video with adapters. I personally have several candy cabs, but functionally this is kind of a good way to go. Using 2x4s building an eight foot long frame or so, I also thought of making a wall of candy cab like game stations each with a JVC D-Series TV that would be slightly titled and allow for simply picking up and setting on side to play vertical games.

That project takes time and skills..
I would just get something like the link bellow and call it a day..,, screw the control panel on the lower shelf, put a PC monitor on the upper shelf with two speakers, use a PC/PI/whater and you are good to go..

This! ^ Would be perfect for you... the art and skill of cabinet making takes on a whole new level there. I second that opinion, and many of us are residents on both forums.

My first setup was an arcade monitor on a tv stand, a dell pc, arcade vga with amp and 2 Qanba Q4 controllers. It was pretty great to lounge on the futon and get into some games.

In case anyone cares I was able to easily interface my AstroCity control panel with my MiSTer with this USB encoder.

Nice, didn’t know they made a 2 player version. Does that show up as one game controller or two? Wondering if it has the issues of swapping player 1 and 2 sometimes.

I've never used that device... but no, it won't be affected by the swapping issue.
That only occurs when using two single player USB devices, because unlike with networking...
Windows can't hold a USB device assignment for a specific ID (like a router can hold a IP address for a specific MAC address).
Its purely first request, first assignment (aka basically random).

That actually surprises me, I'm not a Windows guy but I know it had UUID mappings like Linux does for USB and stuff... would be SUPER easy to implement them similar (SAME?)

But yeah, I grabbed a bunch of wiring crap I had laying around and I had that encoder from an old idea for a SmashTV stick and "just works" (and works great for SmashTV actually.)

At this point I'm probably just going to use my panel as a "controller" while I figure out how I want to go PC wise (15khz,31khz or god forbid LCD) and maybe shop for some cabinets..

god forbid LCD
Ouch man... You really shouldn't sell OLEDs short.
1440p is where its at in terms of scaler support today.

I get the "classic" look of CRT, but its just such a pain in the ass to work with.
On top of that, you have all the imperfections (edge convergence, focus, tube burn) to deal with.

I'm not completely knocking them... I've been in the game since the Framemeister, through OSSC and now Tink5x, but man... I love my CRTs.
