PVM-9044Q Problems

The seller burned somebody else this week too on a Bose stereo.

Translation: Arrived, but the product information saying "good working order" was just there to say that it turns on huh? It doesn't read CDs at all. I hope that such items will be listed as junk in the future. I sure learned a good lesson on these auctions!

Dude has all kinds of random stuff in his store. I'm 99% positive he works for a home electronics recycling service and is selling stuff he picked up in front of people's houses and offices on Yahoo rather than recycling. Double income, he gets paid a pick-up fee, a recycling fee, and then money from unsuspecting Yahoo buyers. That recycling and pickup fee is not cheap either, that's why people throw TVs and shit into rivers around here.

@Joko3 When I lived in Japan this random little truck would drive up, down and around my neighbourhood in Urawa with a speaker attached on the top of it asking for people to donate used electrical items/household goods.

Does that still happen? If so, probably one of those guys!

Yep. Those are the guys. They have days where they’ll pick stuff up for free maybe once a year. The rest of the time you have to them damn near 5000 yen to come pick up your garbage. I have a photo collection of shit that people have thrown into the river near me instead; bikes, TVs, blenders, you name it.

Oh man this is so annoying, great job swapping the board! really sorry that it was the same story on both of them.

All may not be lost however - this interview with Savon Pat talks about which tubes can be swapped with what.

Many of the 20 inch "1000 line" tubes where physically idential to the 600/800/900 line count tubes.

I'm not sure if the same is true of the 9 inch tubes, but it might be worth a listen to see if there is in any hope. I would listen for you but the interview is 2 hours long :-)

I was thinking that as well. Like maybe I could swap the 250 line tube into the 450 line one. However, the 250 line works so well in every way that I kind of don’t want to mess with it. Maybe when my brother is able to visit again I might change my mind.

Tomorrow I’m going to swap the D boards back, adjust the gain and cutoff, and then report back again. Ideally it’d be cool to at least squeeze a year out of that dying tube. I wouldn’t feel TOO burned on that one if I could at least do that.

No dice on messing with the gain settings. Nothing really happened. I swapped the A boards too just for giggles. Same result. Tube has to be dying.

Throwing them up on Yahoo Japan with a 1 yen start price and cash on delivery shipping. This is honestly the easiest way to get rid of them because to have them picked up for recycling will be a minimum of 4000 yen. I marked them with Joko serial numbers to identify them if they pop up again on Yahoo. If they cover it up I’ll know they are mine as well. They do turn on so they’ll pass the “operational check okay!” . At the very least maybe I can identify more lying/lazy sellers.

Just wanted to add this in case anybody else has a similar issue in the future. The tube on the 9041 and 9044 are different, they are two different part numbers in the service manual (p90).

All the boards on the other hand are the same part numbers for both models. I opened up my 9041 and looked at the A and D boards (one's on the sides) and everything indeed does look the same as the 9044.

Therefore, swapping the 9041's tube over into the 9044 really wouldn't do me any good, because I'd essentially just be making another 9041...when I already have one that works just fine ; )

(if anybody thinks anything different please correct me, but this is the conclusion I came to)

One of our members buying a game through me may have just got burned by one of these collect-and-resell types, and I just realized that I forgot to update the final outcome on this story with the PVMs.

I paid a recycling guy to come to pick up both monitors. I don't know whether this guy resells stuff or not, but I wrote all over them in sharpie and disconnected the power connection on both. They stand out like a sore thumb and will both fail the "energization ok" check, so it would be a very hard sale.

To add insult to injury though, it cost me another 6000 yen to have this dude come get them.

I was the last tenant in the gaijin house where I was living in and was tasked to clean out the entire “mansion” with all the roommates previous stuff they’d left for us to use. Maybe a decades worth of hand me downs.

Lonely planet guides and burnt cd/dvds galore, Consoles, Apple Mac laptops, everything ended up in the trash box/cupboard near my place. Work gave me like two labels, no way that was cutting it… Bad gaijin steeze for sure.
