When I got this machine 5 years ago, I always wondered if I could fit a shifter. When I adapted an Outrunners PCB for RM I kinda missed the opportunity to shift and even started building a radiobox which I never finished.
With the Slipstream Conversion I recently managed to do and the gear being stuck in low with no automatic transmission setting it was time. Grabbed an repro Outrun 2 shifter from Ali, fiddeled a bit with the microswitches (as they are momentary buttons on Outrun 2 etc.) and gave the install a try.
First I got a Rad Rally PCB from Jojo.
After thorough testing I converted the romboard to Slipstream, the facts mentioned in the introduction.
After the trouble with the microswitches I made a harness and connected the PCB to a single pushbutton switch. Worked, but it's kinda hard to drive when you have to push down the button to stay in high gear and hitting the turbo button at the same time. I started my internet quest for a sufficient shifter. Was looking at used OR2 shifters from the arcade suppliers we all know and love but decided to go cheaper and picked up an OR2 repro shifter from China. Shipping took 2 weeks which is fine from China to Germany.
Now onto how I would mount it:
I disliked the thought of cutting the original metal shifter cover, that is btw also stated as this in the RM owners manual.
So I made an adapter plate from plywood and mounted it like this for an evening of fun with friends that usually don't get my excitement for Arcades. All of them being huge F1 fans that quickly changed...

So, the evening went by and I asked my friend if he could help me cut a new cover to mount the shifter. Said and done, and one week later I picked up the custom metal cover at his place.
A bit of sanding and three layers of paint later, some new hardware and it's now in the machine, bringing fun and joy with every pcb that you can shift!
I wanted to add the pictures in here. But unfortunately there's some issues so I have to share my Drive link below, sorry!
