If you want to try the adhesive route. 3m makes a good spray. For cleaner surfaces 3M 467MP would work. You will see those on new pinball decals and arcade control panels as an adhesive.
 
I would try and cut and align 3M double sided transfer paper. That will give you the best result but will be time consuming. It is possible as I have done it. Would work best for Candy art but on a woody, contact adhesive (atomized mist type) will be fine.
 
With the mist contact spray, just make sure you spray both side lightly before reattached. You can always use a paint roller after assuming there is no risk of bleedthrough (originals are vinyl)? What you don't want is the stringy shit for something like a headliner - avoid it.
