Well, I decided to yolo it. I have absolutely zero use for the Japanese version.
I bought 5pcs K9F2808UOC-YCBO from here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009657520818.html.
Based on the datasheet it just seems to be a later manufactured version of the one that's already there, K9F2808UOM-YCBO.
Erased them with the Proman. Checked for bad blocks, none found. Programmed the two files for Point Blank 3. Read them back, CRCs match with the original files.
Hot aired the original chips off. Pulled another two pads off, again not connected ones. Man, they just come off! I don't think I have ever pulled this many pads off before.
I soldered the new flash on. I booted it up, it's Point Blank 3. It works.
If you attempt a region swap, you possibly have one attempt at it without pulling off any pads.
Use new flash, don't be an idiot like me and use the original ones. Both my original chips had bad blocks.
Read back the flash after programming. If the CRCs don't match, the chips could still work. Drop the dumps into Mame and test. Remember the delete the nvram folder if you have run the game prior to testing.
