I believe it was meant for a credit display. There's another slot for something on the front of the control panel.

The headphone jacks are on the left, so that's not what the cutout on the right is for.

The cutout on the right is rectangular, perfect size for a card reader. I wonder if it was meant to house a reader for these:

The credit counter could show many credits you had left on your card?

Naturally this is just guesswork on my part, but the time period fits.

Just a bump to say I bought a few repro panels from Alberto and there are very high quality repros. Two Egret 2 panels two NNC’s and two Saturn HSS-0136 and even if some took a little bit more time to make I can only say no regrets at all. These are the best around
