Hi, I just bought a Sega Touring cab in hopes of swapping the monitor on my end of life initial D3 cab only to realize that the touring cab (most likely) runs on a 24 khz monitor. I was wondering if I wanted to monitor swap and run it on a Naomi (31 khz), what my options were?

thanks!

The best way that I know of (and abit expensive one) is to use OSSC pro to downscale naomi's 31khz to 24khz. I do the same on my MS9-29 and picture out of OSSC PRO is really good. I am running Wii (component 31kz), Dreamcast (vga 31khz), PS2 (component 15khz & 31khz) , PC (vga 31khz), OG XBOX (component 31khz), XBOX 360 (vga 31khz) downscaled to 24khz and it works like a charm.

yeah, OSSC pro is out of my price range LOL. I've been reading about an Ultracade UVC even those are kinda rare too...

if your monitor run with 24khz so it's higly probrably accept 15khz too. Naomi have DIP switch and you can run any game in 15hz 480i. Exact reference about the chassi required.

I would personally not get a UVC for the price they go for. Its a totally outdated downscaler.
Counterpoint: The UVC is by far the best choice as bang for your buck. They do pop up once in a while. But i wouldn't call it an outdated downscaler. It does what it needs to do, and it does it well. Especially for your needs.

I run 2 UVC's for my Naomi's, connected to my New Astro City's and Windy that all have Nanao MS9 dual res monitors. I recently picked up a 3rd UVC for a good price and will be using it for another project.
Naomi image quality is amazing in 24khz. It's versatile, and you can feed it RGB VGA from anything that outputs it. I've even done PC (so I can run fightcade on my cabinets without doing any graphics card bios hacks), XBOX360, converted Gamecube, Wii, XBOX OG, and Dreamcast, all with great results.

OSSC Pro is waaaaaay overkill and too expensive for a single feature you're looking for.

When I say UVC is outdated downscaler I meant UVC compared to OSSC Pro: For example:
1- UVC cannot take component input natively, you need to add another device into the chain,
2- UVC has no picture controls whats so ever, OSSC Pro is full of options, profiles etc, OSSC Pro has a very nice CRT freindly UI as well.
3- UVC has no support for HD and FHD resolutions so it cannot take signals from PS3, PS4 switch etc
3- How does UVC handle the best selling console of all time i.e PS2 ? OSSC Pro seemlessly upscales 15khz to 24khz and downscales 31khz to 24khz without changing anything on the unit.

Also not sure how OSSC Pro is way more expensive than UVC: On average UVC goes for USD220~USD250 and if you add component to RGB transcoder cost, UVC total gets to USD300, OSSC Pro is USD335. Hence UVC doesnt have a big cost advantage anymore imo.

Why does the OP need 1-3, though? He wants to run Naomi in his cab.

As for picture controls, you are right. The UVC is a solid, no-frills downscaler. It does 1 job, and it does that job well.
No fluff, no additional features to gum up the works. It puts out what you put in. Simple and just works.

Re: Switch, I've used my switch with the UVC. You just gotta set your Switch's output to 480p. You can do the same on the PS3 and PS4. Add an HDMI to VGA passthrough converter and you're set.

UVC can still be found for cheap. Don't let ebay prices fool you. I just bought my 3rd one for $100 a few months ago.
The deals are out there, you just gotta look around and be patient.

RE: OSSC Pro cost.
Basic cost of the OSSC Pro with only a remote is €308. Euros. Convert to USD that's $350 today. If you buy from USA distributors it's up to $449.99.
Where are you seeing the OSSC Pro for $335?

Still, much more money and overkill in features for the OP's needs.

Everyones entitled to their opnion. I stand by my position. VGP sells ossc pro without remote for usd335 equiv.

You can use converter and transcoders but why would you ? It adds so many cables and parts in process.

Hey buy whatever do whateve suits your need. No one has has to agree with me if they think doesnt make sense. That’s fine. I have spent plenty of time with down scalers from gbc to TV1 to emotias to super emotias and all the others. I think OSSC Pro is the best when it comes changining the singal and then display picture on a CRT. Hence shared my opnion.

If in future ones's setup or needs change OSSC pro will be of much better use than UVC.

Agree to disagree. I’ve been running the UVC forever, probably before you even got into the hobby. You don’t need a complicated device as a full-fledged console up/downscaler. Besides, the OSSC Pro’s main function is upscaling. Downscaling is a nice addon feature, but the UVC is a dedicated downscaler.

I just think you’re butthurt from not being able to buy a UVC for the price you wanted so you’re trying to slander it now. But like I said, the deals are out there, “patience young padawan”.

I’ve also tried other devices like the GBC AIO (which doesn’t support 24khz), couple Extrons, etc and the UVC has always been the cleanest and easiest to install.

Here are Some example pictures of running my UVC in my Astros and Aeros.
Nanao MS9 in the Astros, MS8 in the Aero.

Super clear and crisp. 24khz is much nicer than downscaling to 15khz for the Naomi. I would say the UVC is perfectly made for the Naomi altogether.

I’ve also built my UVC into my Sega IO/Jamma stack for the easiest installation. I built 2 of these, and my 3rd UVC is going into a whole different project (eventually).

This gives me downscaling, non-laggy IO, with cps2/3 kick harness support.

The UVC is for arcade cab owners who want to downscale arcade games.
If you want a good device to downscale consoles, sure, go with the OSSC Pro or equivalent.

Nah man some of your comments were not nice and totally unnecessary. So I wont engage in this conversation further with you. You took it the wrong way.

Sami, we've dealt many times before. I've sold you multiple things and our comms have been fine in DM's. I'm just calling it the way I see it. I know for the fact you were frustrated at not being able to buy a UVC when you were going down the downscaling rabbit hole.

You are very strong opinioned in your stance here, but it's actually unnecessary to bash the UVC when it's been a staple. You didn't need to downplay it, or call it outdated when it does the one job it needs to do well.

If you think I'm being not nice for disagreeing with you, or calling out your bias, then i apologize. but I think the OP should have all the facts first before decided on what route to go, and when all's said and done, the UVC is more cost effective and simpler to set-up than a full-fledged Upscaler with downscaling addon features.

I'll leave it at that.

Yes, we have dealt mutiple times and I appreciate that. Frustrated about not buying uvC ? Not sure about that.

FWIW. I'm located in Toronto, just like @msamiullah and over the years have had multiple UVC devices (with different firmware revisions) I know their pros and their cons. I used to buy them for $50 each on ebay in 2010, and most recently, I sold my spare, for $200 (that's $140USD for you Yankees) to a local arcade collector.

I also have owned XRGB mini, OSSC, RetroTink5X, and still own and use the OSSC Pro. There's a time and place for every device. While the OSSC Pro works great with consoles to my HDTV, and is the only scalar that doesn't have any issues with the strange res coming out of my X68000, I don't think it's a good option for my NAC. That's why I still use a UVC with Naomi 2 on my NAC.

It's the only instant on device that's invisible in my video chain. It's as easy to setup and use as my Sega JVS JAMMA adapter. Plug and forget.

Now if I wanted to switch between consoles, and tinker with settings .. yeah. I'd use the OSSC Pro -- on my HDTV; not my arcade machine. :D
