Sega CD Model 2 - metal ring on spindle

Hi Folks,

I have a Sega CD Model 2 that I want to work - but the disc won't spin correctly - after a bunch of googling, etc. and looking at different repair blogs - I think that my unit is MISSING the metal ring on the spindle, that engaged with the magnet to spin the disc.

I have looked and I can't find this part anywhere - does anyone have any idea on this, other than buying a "for parts" unit and trying to pop that ring off and glue it on?

This solution should work (I've done it before) But it's not for the faint of heart. You'll need to remove the spindle magnet from the lid of the Sega CD 2. PS1 uses 3 ball bearings to hold the CD; not the magnet friction ring from above. Your biggest challenges would be:

- getting the old spindle off the motor and popping the new one on (assuming the shaft is the same diameter)
- setting the height of the new spindle correctly
- coming up with a solution that will not have the height drift over time - you're now going to be pressing down on the CD to make it stay on the spindle/ball bearings; before you did a gentle drop. This pressing down might change the spindle height over time, making it go out of alignment. My fix was a few drops of crazy clue on top of the shaft.

Of course, this is all assuming the laser is your CD 2 is still good. If it's not, you got 2 unknowns fighting you (bad alignment? bad laser?)

Hmmmm yeah - that does sound like a lot of challenges... :) I know the laser is good - RIGHT now.

Still surprised there isn't a Sega CD ODE yet....

I was thinking you could just remove the metal ring that he needs from the PS1 spindle and put it on the Sega CD spindle instead

I think it will snap into the plastic ring, you don’t want to use glue because that will modify the weight/balance of the spindle

At least if you buy from the Aliexpress seller you get 5 attempts at making it work
