Sony BVM-D9H5J - The Director's Monitor - Asking $1,900 OBO

COMPLETE FIELD KIT · MATCHING SERIAL NUMBERS · LOCAL PICKUP, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Pictures are HERE
This is the monitor that rode on camera carts and OB trucks when the picture had to be right. The BVM-D9H5J is the 9-inch member of Sony's BVM-D series - the final generation of Trinitron broadcast evaluation monitors - engineered to deliver reference-grade color and geometry in a package small enough to carry to the shot. Directors and DPs used these for on-set framing, focus, and exposure checks precisely because nothing else portable could be trusted the way a BVM could: an HR Trinitron tube, broadcast calibration architecture, and the same modular BKM input-card system as its full-size siblings, running from AC or clip-on broadcast batteries.

As a class, this was arguably the best portable picture of the CRT era - a genuine master-series evaluation display you could hold in two hands. When production went digital-flat-panel, nothing replaced the combination this monitor offered: true CRT motion, native 15 kHz handling, and multiformat capability up through HD via its option cards.

Why this example - matching serials throughout

Collectors know most surviving D9s are facility mutts - chassis from one unit, power supply from another, cards from a parts bin. This one is all original and all matching: the serial number on the menu screen, the rear chassis label, and the power supply unit all agree (serial 2001496). For a collector-grade example, that provenance is the single hardest thing to find.
  • Operating hours: 8,163 - read directly from the service menu. For a broadcast monitor of this era (many logged 30,000+ hours running around the clock in facilities), this is a low-hours tube.
  • Good working condition. Powers up, calibrates, and displays as it should. Photos include displayed test content showing clean geometry - see for yourself rather than taking my word for it.
  • The tube face is completely free of scratches and marks. On a field monitor - a class that spent its working life sliding in and out of racks and riding in trucks - unmarked glass is genuinely rare, and unlike anything else on these monitors, the tube face is the one surface that can never be repaired or replaced. Close-up photos included.

Complete field kit - everything included

Original Sony power supplySerial 2001496 - matches monitor
Sony BKM-129X input cardGenuine Sony (not a reproduction). Analog RGB/component - tested, works great
Sony BKM-142HD input cardGenuine Sony. HD-SDI input - untested (I have no HD-SDI source); no reason to believe it is anything but functional, but priced and sold as untested
    Sony BP-L90A batteryBroadcast lithium-ion pack
    Sony BP-L60A batteryBroadcast lithium-ion pack
Sony BC-L70 battery chargerThe correct Sony charger for the L-series packs - rarely offered with these monitors
Sony MB-520 rack mountFactory 19" EIA rack adaptor for the D9 series
Original 4:3 bezelFactory 4:3 bezel, intact, is installed and included with the unit.
Rear CRT protection guardFactory plastic guard protecting the back area during rack handling - almost always missing
    2× power cables
  • Assembling this kit piecemeal today - monitor, two genuine cards, two batteries, the correct charger, and the factory rack hardware - would take years of patient hunting. It is offered here as one complete, coherent package.

    Technical summary

    • 9-inch-class HR Trinitron, broadcast evaluation grade, 4:3
    • Multiformat: native 15 kHz SD (240p/480i/576i) plus additional formats via option cards, including HD-SDI through the installed BKM-142HD
    • Two-slot modular BKM input system (both slots filled, both cards included)
    • AC operation via the matching Sony power supply, or fully portable on the included broadcast battery packs
    • Approx. 22 lb as configured - the most portable true BVM ever made
  • Condition, terms, and pickup

    • Used, good working condition, from an adult-owned private collection. Photos are of the actual unit and kit.
    • BKM-129X path fully tested. BKM-142HD sold untested as described above. Batteries hold and deliver charge (they are kept at approximately 50% charge level to extend useful life while in storage); as with all aged broadcast packs, runtime should be considered a bonus rather than a specification.
    • LOCAL PICKUP ONLY - Southern California (Orange County area). No shipping at this time; please do not ask. You are welcome to see it power up and display at pickup.
    • Cash or agreed electronic payment at pickup. Sold as-is, as-described, no returns - everything disclosed above is the complete picture.
  • If you have been waiting for a complete, matching-serial D9 field kit rather than another orphaned chassis, this is the one. Serious questions welcome.
