Hi folks, sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, but it seemed like the most likely place. Feel free to move it if need be.

I'm trying to purchase a Soul Calibur II kit and am not having any luck. My next step is to piecemeal it together with whatever I can find. I know SCII is really restrictive in that it needs a special security dongle, but how are the different versions effected by this?

If I find a ver.A disk and a ver.D dongle, will they be compatible? How do I know what version the disk or dongle are?

For instance: someone in my area is selling the disk, which reads "SC21 DVD0" but no version number, and a dongle which may or may not have come with the kit, that reads "SC22 Ver.C"

Thanks in advance!

Ah thank you, that's helpful! So, this "SC22 Ver.C" is not a security dongle, since it's not on that list? Would it just be a memory card?

u want ver. D and 2 dongles. 1 for security, and one for the conquest mode memory. if you are running on 256 hardware, u also want the 246+ mode enabled, otherwise u get soul calibur 2: Chipmunks edition
Oh that's why I was been testing it last time it becomes chipmunks sound

And I'm using a copy disc

Are they really just PS2 memory cards with?
I don't know anything about the System 256 hardware but I'd imagine if I was an arcade operator spending thousands then seeing PS2 memory cards I'd be scratching my head a bit lol

They are - but encrypted with special chips... so not *just* a PS2 memory card.

The Namco 246/256 *is* a souped up PS2 though - so not unexpected.
If that's the case then the PS2 port of Soul Calibur II would be most accurate then?
Even though the GC and the XBOX version seem to look and perform way better
I've never played Soul Calibur II in arcades
I did play the original Soul Calibur and the Dreamcast version
Home port of that was just way better

It IS just a normal memory card. Exactly just a normal PS2 memory card. SO DO WHAT THE STICKER IN THE BACK SAY and DO NOT PLUG THAT on a RETAIL PS2 as it will FORMAT the card and delete the quest data which is in a proprietary RAW format. The said RAW data is bound to the card using the card magic gate encryption and we don't know how to re-create it.

What is special about the card is the data on it and as of right now it is impossible to re-create it or use data from a different card.

I was able to get one from another member of this forum. Took about two months of searching. Good luck, they're a bit rare, it seems.

New questions! Finally got a copy of the game, dongle, memory card and. System 246.

Two issues - first, the game doesn't always load correctly. Some times it will never display anything, sometimes it will say "First Time Load" (or something to that effect) and forget all previouslystored data, some times it will lock up on the copyright warning. For the first week it was running flawlessly, but as of a day or two ago, the only way to get it to boot is to turn on the system, cross your fingers, and start over if it doesn't load.

Second, it is the Japanese version, but is there a setting somewhere to change text to English? Is the region determined by the disk or dongle? Are matching disk and dongle regions required? E.g. if I burn an English disk, can I use the same dongle I have been using?

Thanks!

I am 99% certain that the security dongle determines if its the japanese or english variant.

Regarding your other issues - what condition is the disc you got? maybe the reader is having issues reading the disc, or maybe the disc drive is going out.

Matt

The DVD drive that came with the system was DoA, so I replaced it with a new BenQ DVD drive and it was working... for a while. I'll see if I can get another to test with. I seem to remember seeing a list of known working drives, but can't find it any more. Do you know of such a list?

You have problem with booting because:
1. Battery (CR2032) that helps to hold save data on system is dying.
2. DVD drive is dying.
3. Your DVD with game is heavily scratched.
4. Problem with delivering 5V to the system.

I personally recommend LG GDR-8164B or 4164B DVD drive for Soul Calibur games and Tekken 5 games. Capcom Fighting Jam works as well and maybe more.

Dongle determinates which region/language is in the game and there is no option in service menu to change that. Only option is conversion.

4. Problem with delivering 5V to the system.

Oh, this reminds me, I had a question about that, too!

So with no load I set my power supply's +5v to 5.01v. Under load it drops to 4.5v or so at the IO board. Should I be tuning the power supply's +5v for load or no load?
