I really hope this is not an extremely stupid question...

Is there any reason I should not cross a start button with a coin button? Trying to workout a clean way to coin up on my games that don't support freeplay. Or even more a pain in the butt, games that need separate coin up per player.

I guess a second question, can I short player 1 and player 2 coin up?
 
A Taito F3 will crash with a "coin switch error" if you hold a coin button for like half a second (it's meant to signal a coin blocked in the mechanism) . That has a way higher chance to happen if you cross it with the Start button.
 
Aahh I see. I figured there was a reason my local arcades don't do it this way.

I guess I'll just give in and add some dedicated buttons.
 
While I agree with Fredo, it can still be done depending on what you're doing. Are you using a SuperGun?

I wanna use this method in my blasty city.

I normally use the service button, but I just got TMNT which only coins up player 1 with the service button.
I have a JNX adapter in here that I tried with on.
With TMNT it's no problem bc start isn't even used. I just don't wanna cause myself problems with any of my other boards/systems.

Hmm, I'd test it out with the games you have because while it can cause a problem with some PCBs (F3 mentioned), if you flick the button fast, it's OK. Also I think the way around this is to set up the press as momentary, instead of one while held.

That all being said, you should see if the 2 player ROMs of TMNT help, b/c I know they allow you to choose your turtle and are not tied to the coin slot. It's been a long time so I'm not sure at all if that would work for you!

oh sweet! Good to know! I order a 2 player ROM set the other day. Just waiting for it to come in.
 
As far as I'm concerned, some of my games do not have free-play, my Japanese Arkanoid Returns for exemple. In this case, I set the games credits to the max per coin (1 coin = 6 credits) and I keep a bunch of coins in an ashtray nearby.

Yeah I also set the boards that way. I should get some 100yen coins (or whatever else works) for my Blast City. My Astro City sadly doesn't have the coin mech, so that a big part of why I started looking into clean alternatives.
