System 256 Very loud sound

Picked up a 256 ready for the multi :)
but hooking it up to test and the sound is VERY loud when using the RCA outs on the front of the unit, and you can hear the DVD drive loading/whine over the speakers
its currently being powered by the Jamma adapter but the sound directly from the 256 to a small amp, I had a 256 in the past that was powered by the JVS lead and this sounded fine, is this faulty or is it the Jamma adapter bumping up the audio?
 
Jamma adapter has a pot integrated. Try to lower the volume from there.
 
does that pot alter the sound on the 256? i'm not using the jamma edge for sound, taking the sound directly from the 256 unit
 
And what is amplifying that sound coming directly from the unit? There must be an amp.
 
Yes there is a small amp that I use in my cab for CPS2/PC with mame
the Jamma sound is not connected to the speakers in my New Astro City, but it goes via the amp

I dont have any issues with the CPS2 or PC but with the 256 I have to have the amp at it's lowest volume but the sound is very loud from the 256 and you can hear whine and other sounds when the DVD is being accessed, can hear the motor spinning up over the speakers!
