Hello everyone,

I have a Taito Type X4 that powers on but does not boot and shows no video signal at all, not even the BIOS. The machine had been unused for quite a long time.

I have carried out the following tests:

  • When I turn it on, all the fans are running, including the graphics card fan.
  • The hard drive spins and appears to be working.
  • Inside the machine, two green LEDs light up.
  • On the outside, where the jumpers are located, the red LED comes on, and the green LED briefly attempts to start/blinks, but the system never actually boots.
  • The jumpers are configured with 1 and 2 down (ON), and 3 and 4 up (OFF).
  • I tested the graphics card in another conventional PC, and it works perfectly, so the graphics card itself appears to be ruled out.
  • I tested both RAM modules individually, first with one and then with the other, as well as different combinations, but the result is always the same.
  • I tested the DVI output from the graphics card with a monitor, but there is no signal.
  • I also tested HDMI, again with no signal.
  • I also tried the VGA and HDMI outputs on the motherboard itself, but neither one produces any image.
  • I have tried booting with the hard drive connected and without the hard drive. The behavior is exactly the same.
  • I have also replaced the motherboard battery with new ones, but the result remains exactly the same.

Therefore, I don't think the hard drive is the problem, since even with no HDD installed, the BIOS/POST should still appear.

What I find particularly strange is that the machine is receiving power, the fans are running, the hard drive spins and the LEDs light up, but absolutely no image is displayed, not even the BIOS.

The graphics card works perfectly in another computer, and both RAM modules have been tested individually. The motherboard battery has also been replaced with a new one.

At this point, I suspect that the problem could be related to the motherboard, BIOS, power supply to one of the components, or the CPU, but I don't know exactly how to interpret the LED sequence or how far the boot process is getting.

Could anyone with experience repairing Taito Type X4 systems help me understand what this LED sequence means and what I should check next?

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

I would also like to add that there is no beep or POST beep of any kind when attempting to start the computer. However, I can hear a metallic or electrical clicking/clacking sound (“click-clack”) during the startup attempt.
