Type 1 Vc/Vc2/Hotd1 Light gun substitution?

Provided you have the gun i/o for model 2. Can I rewire say a newer type 2 light gun to it?

These are pretty orphaned being type 1.
Anyone try a type 2 gun on the type 1 i/o?
